About the Book
One dress. Four women. An amazing destiny.
Charlotte Malone is getting married. Yet all is not settled in the heart of Birmingham's chic bridal boutique owner. Charlotte can dress any bride to perfection-except herself. When she discovers a vintage mint-condition wedding gown in a battered old trunk, Charlotte embarks on a passionate journey to discover the women who wore the gown before her.
Emily in 1912. Mary in 1939. And Hillary in 1968. Each woman teaches Charlotte something about love in her own unique way. Woven within the threads of the beautiful hundred-year-old gown is the truth about Charlotte's heritage, the power of faith, and the beauty of finding true love.
My Thoughts
In The Wedding Dress, Rachel Hauck tells four incredible love stories but threads them together in such a way that they come together in one seamless story. Charlotte owns a wedding dress shop and has a knack for finding the perfect wedding gown for every bride—except herself. When she discovers an antique wedding dress in the bottom of an old trunk she purchased at an auction, she goes on a journey to discover the secrets of the dress and discovers a lot about herself as well.
This book was so unique in how it was pieced together. Rachel alternated between Emily in 1912 and Charlotte in the present day and even gave us a peek into the vantage points of Daniel and Tim. I thought it would be choppy and confusing at first, but it wasn't at all. In fact, I found myself loving each part of the story so much that I didn't want to switch back to the other at times.
I liked Charlotte right off the bat and appreciated that she had obvious flaws and struggles, which made for a much more realistic character. The secondary characters in this story were just as delightful. I especially liked Hillary and Mary, the other brides that wore the dress, and Dix, Charlotte's business partner.
In a way the dress itself was a character. Reminiscent of the pants in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, this "magic" dress fit every bride that wore it perfectly. In the author's note at the end, Rachel explains that she wrote the dress as a symbol of the gospel, and I saw some wonderful parallels between the two.
Overall, The Wedding Dress is romantic, tender, and full of southern charm. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! [4.5 stars]
