A Ripple Effect Romance, Book 6
Fiction / Contemporary / Romance
Available March 2014
HEA Publishing

About the Book
Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever.

But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest.
Until… Erik.

Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she’d never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

My Thoughts
It took me a little time to get into Immersed, but once I did, I really enjoyed it! It's witty, charming, and different from other romance novels I've read recently. Lisette is determined to succeed in her business but finds that her clients are constantly hitting on her. When her aunt suggests that she has a make-under, she goes for it.

I loved Lisette. She's sassy and confident but still struggling a little to come into her own. Of course, her newest client Erik doesn't make this any easier. She's insanely attracted to him, but of course tries to keep everything professional. I don't want to give any spoilers away, but the author did a great job of tying together all the various aspects of the story. It happened a little quickly for my taste, I was glad my questions were answered in the end.

Immersed is another clean romance. I'm sad to see this series come to an end, but I'm hopeful that these authors will team up for another great round of stories soon!  [3.5 stars stars]

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.

About the Author
Jennifer Griffith studied French, German, Japanese, and a wee bit of Spanish in her school days. Her grandmother was Norwegian, and Jennifer grew up with lots of Scandinavian traditions floating around, including fabulous cardamom laced cookies called Krumkaker, made on a fancy waffle iron. However, she’d never dream of trying to teach someone any of those languages. And she might botch the cookies. Instead, she writes novels in English, drives her five kids a million places, and laughs with her husband, who came up with the plot for Immersed because he’s just a cool muse like that.

Sneak Peek
“So…what?"

“Plain and simple: you’re too pretty for this job.”

Lisette rolled her eyes and picked up her brush again, going at the high spots on the wall with vigor. “You’ve been talking to my mom again. Did she finally rub off on you?” Great. Now no one believed in her. Not even Aunt Corky. Just a pretty face.

“No, not in that way. What I’m saying is that your business has merit. It can totally work. But just not with you, the way you are.”

Aunt Corky probably didn’t mean to make Lisette want to cry, but the tears welled in her eyes all the same. This dream had taken every waking hour of the last eighteen months. She’d poured her heart and soul into making it grow, not to mention all the money she’d buried in it—advertising, the office, everything. And her time. Day and night. How entrepreneurs lived past age forty mystified her. She barely had time to keep an eye on her elderly next door neighbors. And when a girl was too busy to serve other people, she was too busy.

Aunt Corky reached over and grabbed Lisette’s hand. “What I’m saying is you need a makeover.”

Lisette raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t raise that eyebrow at me, Z. I’m serious about this.” Aunt Corky folded her arms across her chest. “Not a makeover in the traditional sense. More like a make-under. You know, to make you look less…gorgeous.”

Here it went again, with the appearance factor. Didn’t all the studies say that people who were good-looking had a better chance at success than those who were below average?

“You’re not buying it, I can tell. But think with me. Dark circles under the eyes. A greasy wig. Lines at the mouth. And right about here,” she pointed at her nostril, “a big wart.”

“A wart!”

“Okay, maybe not a wart. That might be over the top. But something that will keep all the pawing maniacs at a distance.” Aunt Corky shrugged and leaned against a dry wall like she’d made her case and the prosecution rested. “Think about it, Z. I mean, you want Immerse to succeed, right? All the years of language skills and business acumen you’ve amassed, they’re going to waste.”

Lisette sighed. Even though she wouldn’t admit it aloud to Aunt Corky, unless something changed at Immerse, things could go south pretty fast. However, she wasn’t convinced it was reason enough to subjugate her dignity and go into daily disguise just to ward off pretenders.

Aunt Corky resumed painting. “Just think about it. Don’t decide now. But if you want to do it, I know somebody. Samantha. A genius with bad makeup. She could absolutely transform you. No one would even recognize you.”

This was crossing over from ridiculous into the absurd.

Intro to Moving Too Fast
From Author Helen Conrad

ìWinning isnít everything-itís the only thing.î

Injured racecar driver Grant Carrington lives by those words and Carrie Harlow is afraid heíll end up dying by them. She resists him at first, instinctively seeing that heís dangerous to know. He needs her skill as a physical therapist, and she lives to heal. But he lives to win. That puts them at odds right from the beginning.

Grant is probably the hardest hero Iíve ever written. He puts on a gruff, rough shell to protect himself from the vulnerability he feels after being injured. His past is littered with old emotional pain and a history that makes him think he doesnít deserve to be loved by a woman as good and loveable as Carrie. It takes patience and courage for her to work with himóbut she heals his heart at the same time she heals his body, and in the end, he realizes that accepting and giving love makes him the biggest winner of all.

I hope you enjoy these booksóand be on the lookout for the next three which will be released soon!

Moving Too Fast
Destiny Bay Romances - Forever Yours
(Sweet Edition #3)
by Helen Conrad
Adult Romance
Paperback & Ebook, 250 pages
March 28th 2014 by Doorknock Publishing

A sweet old-fashioned girl isn't what Grant Carrington is looking for. A man who lives for speed and danger, he's only slowed down because he's been forced to by an injury. Carrie Harlow isnít his type, but he needs her in order to heal. She knows she's playing with fire, but she feels she can help him and she goes for it—even though she knows she's endangering her own heart as she fixes his.

Recipe for Carrie's Chicken Picatta included.

Purchase from Amazon.

My Thoughts
This has been a fun series, and I'm so glad I took a chance on these books! It was fun to meet the third Carrington brother—the wild and crazy one! Of the three books, this was probably my favorite storyline.

Carrie's determination to help Grant recover from his injury—despite the fact that he thinks he can recover on his own—was a great match for Grant's stubbornness. I enjoyed seeing how Carrie grew throughout the book, to the point where she was a strong character rather than someone who has trouble standing up for herself. The epilogue was the perfect conclusion to this series as well!

There was still a fair amount of "head hopping" which caused a little confusion at time, but it didn't bother me as much as in the previous two books.

I've enjoyed these "sweet" romances and would love to see the author release more of her prior novels as sweet editions. [3.5 stars]

(Note: Unlike many books that I review, this book is written for the general market, but it is overall a clean read.)

I received a free copy of this book from the author via Prism Book Tours in exchange for my fair and honest review.

A Little About the Destiny Bay Romances: Sweet Editions
From Author Helen Conrad

"The Destiny Bay Romances take place in the sort of beach town I've always loved--and now I live in one! But writing about beach towns came first and this series is centered on the rich, influential Carrington family living along the California Coast, and in Hawaii. These are good-looking, fast-driving, hard-hitting men and women whose impulses lead them into trouble every time--and inevitably to fall in love.

The original series includes language and love scenes that aren't, for the most part, especially harsh and explicit--but some of my readers from my years writing sweets for Harlequin as Raye Morgan have asked if we couldn't have sweet and clean versions--and I thought--what a good idea!

These are basically the same stories...but with the conflicts softened a bit, the language cleaned up, and no explicit love scenes. There are still a few adult situations, but they're muted. Consider these the PG versions.

I hope you enjoy them!"

A Stitch and a Prayer by Eva Gibson (Blog Tour + Review)

A Stitch and a Prayer
by Eva Gibson
Quilts of Love series, Book 18
Christian Fiction / Historical
Available May 2014
Abingdon Press
220 pages

About the Book
A quilt becomes a labor of love for a lonely wife mysteriously separated from her young husband.

After her fiancé returns from the Klondike gold rush in 1897, Florence Harms sets about building a new life in her new marriage—even though the lingering effects of illness have left her weak and vulnerable. She and her young husband, Will, work tirelessly to clear the land around their Northwest cabin, content with their modest life.

But then a stranger comes knocking and Florence suddenly senses a restlessness in Will’s spirit that she had never seen before. When he leaves her with only a note that tells her he will return before their baby’s birth, she is devastated, and the illness that stiffened her joints returns. Counting the days until Will walks back through her door, Florence busies herself with a Tree of Life quilt displaying a map of the farm they call home. Doubts claw at her heart as Florence struggles to believe Will’s promise to return to her. Will her labor of love-and faith in God—sustain her as she waits to see her beloved once again?

My Thoughts
This is a difficult review to write because, unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book. While I've enjoyed many of the books in this series, this book just didn't resonate with me. It felt scattered, and I was never really sure what the story was supposed to be. There seemed to be a lot of time focusing on daily, ordinary tasks. I also had a hard time discerning when this book was supposed to take place. It was supposedly set in 1899 but the timing seemed off somehow. I also had difficulty connecting with the characters, who both came across as moody and immature. Additionally, the synopsis on the back cover was totally different than the synopsis included above. It made it seem like Will's leaving with only a note to Florence was the "main" event of the book, but it didn't happen until halfway through the book. I was looking for more adventure and just didn't get what I felt like the publisher advertised.

The one positive thing I would like to note is the strong focus on trusting God. Florence constantly went to Scripture when she was feeling overwhelmed, letting the words wash over her and remind her of God's presence. What a wonderful lesson for us all.

Based on the review on Amazon and Goodreads, it seems that some readers enjoyed this book. As always, I would encourage you to read other reviews if you think this book sounds like something you would like to read. [2 star]

I received a free copy of this book from Abingdon Press through Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Until I Found You by Victoria Bylin (Blog Tour + Review)

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Until I Found You
by
Victoria Bylin
Available May 2014 from Bethany House
Christian Fiction / Contemporary / Romance
  352 pages

About the Book
Finding each other was only the beginning . . .

When Kate Darby swerves off a mountain road to avoid hitting a California condor, she ends up trapped in her car, teetering on the edge of a cliff. Terrified, she breathes a prayer that changes her life.

It's Nick Sheridan who comes to Kate's rescue. Nick is handsome and confident, and he seems to develop a habit of rescuing her, but Kate is in town only until her grandmother recuperates from a stroke. She's not planning to get involved with one of the locals.

Nick is a reformed veteran of life in the fast lane, a new Christian, and a travel writer. When he sees a car dangling on the edge of a cliff, the daredevil in him jumps into action. He doesn't expect to be swept off his feet by the car's occupant. He's made a vow--no dating for a year--but keeping that vow is going to be a lot more difficult now that he's met Kate Darby. . . .

My Thoughts
Until I Found You was my first introduction to Victoria Bylin. I think it's safe to say that it won't be my last venture through one of her books!

On the surface, the story is about two people with lots of issues who are navigating their way through a new friendship. However, there's so much more to it than that! The author uses this front to convey messages about God's love and our need to place our ultimate trust in Him. I loved how she used the story of the condors to relay messages of faithfulness and to show God's majesty as well. And Leona's story of her marriage and her own relationship with God told through journal entries was a powerful addition.

With so many things going on simultaneously, I expected at times to feel overwhelmed. However, somehow it all worked together perfectly to tell an amazing story! Nick and Kate are awesome characters—real people with real issues. They're not perfect—by any stretch!—but they both want to be better people, even if they don't always know how to go about it. Leona is an endearing character. She really balances some of the tension that comes from the other characters with her steadiness.

Until I Found You is unlike any other book I've read recently! Bylin has written a compelling story that left me in awe!  [4.5 stars]

I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House through CFBA in exchange for my fair and honest review.

About the Author
Known for her realistic, likable characters and vivid writing, Victoria Bylin writes both western and contemporary inspirational romance. Her books have finaled in the ACFW Carol Awards, the Rita Awards and RT Magazine’s Reviewers’ Choice Awards. She and her husband currently live in Lexington, Kentucky and have two grown sons.
A Word from the Author
This may sound crazy, but I was driven to write romance by giant bugs and killer rabbits. I just couldn't take it anymore. My husband and two sons would be camped in front of the television watching a movie about spiders the size of bowling balls, and I'd be wondering when the handsome scientist would get around to kissing the spunky woman with the bug spray. When it didn't happen, I decided to write my own happy endings--without the giant bugs...

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is ...

All Right Here by Carre Armstrong Gardner
Tyndale House | June 1, 2014

About the Book
Ivy Darling can’t have children of her own, and her husband Nick’s resentment is forcing them apart. And while Ivy has the support and love of her large, close-knit family, Nick’s family has never welcomed her into the fold.

When the three children next door are abandoned by their mother, Ivy and Nick take them in for the night. One night becomes several, and suddenly Ivy and Nick find themselves foster parents to the only African-American kids in the town of Copper Cove, Maine. As Ivy grows more attached to the children, Nick refuses to accept their eclectic household as a permanent family. Just as Ivy begins to question whether or not she wants to save her emotionally barren marriage, Nick begins to discover how much Ivy and the children mean to him. But is his change of heart too little, too late?

Why I Can't Wait to Read It
The cover initially attracted me to this book. (Yes, I judge books by their covers all the time!) But the synopsis seems strong. And I'm a huge fan of fostering, so I'm interested to read this fictional take on such hard topics.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?!

"It's Monday! What Are You Reading?" is a weekly meme hosted by Book Journey where we share what we're reading and our goals for the week.

What I Read Last Week ...
Despite a busy schedule at work over the pat two weeks, I've managed to read quite a bit. Although, it definitely helped having four days off work for comp time! These were all SO good, but Silenced, Fatal Exchange, and The One were all 5-star books!

What I'm Reading Now ...
So I've been hopping between quite a few books the last couple of weeks. I'm hoping to finish one or two of these this week.

Audio
I paused on both of these and listened to about half of The Book Thief before moving on. I'm excited to pick these back up this week!

What I Hope to Read This Week ...
I'm not really sure what I'll be reading next week, but these three are likely possibilities. :)

That's what I'm hoping to read this week. What are you reading?

The Top Ten Things To Know About Qatar:

  1. The largest group of Christians in Qatar are migrant workers from countries like the Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
  2. Many of them live in labor camps. They work from the early morning to late at night, sometimes seven days a week. After work, they return to their labor camp where they eat and sleep.
  3. Christian fellowship inside labor camps is prohibited, and needs to be done in secret.
  4. According to International Monetary Fund, Qatar has the highest GDP per capita of any country in the world.
  5. The World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022.
  6. The international news group Al Jazeera is based in Qatar.
  7. According to the Qatar Statistics Authority, the country has the highest literacy rate of any country in the Arab Speaking World.
  8. Should it become known that someone wants to convert to Christianity, the pressure from families or their peers will be severe.
  9. According to the US State Department, Qatar has a population of around 1.8 million people, however only 250,000 of these are citizens.
  10. Christians ask that we pray that the country will not only present itself like a moderate and modern country, but also show that it can be. Despite the rapid changes over the past decades and growth in wealth, their Islamic heritage and culture stands firm. There is no openness to other religions, which makes it difficult for foreign workers, let alone for local believers.
