My Thoughts

What a fun story! A League of Her Own is a great combination of romance, interesting characters (with lots of problems!), emotion, and baseball. The characters were well developed and multi-dimensional, which I appreciated. Yes, they had problems that affected them, but they were woven into the story so that those problems directed--but didn't take over--the story. The author did a great job at writing in an emotional way. I laughed and teared up at various points. Heather and Garrett were likeable characters, and I really enjoyed getting to know them!

I didn't even realize that this book was by Karen Rock when I started it. (Way to pay attention, right?!) I read another of her books last summer and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be watching for more of this author's work in the future! [4 stars]

NOTE: While I generally read and review Christian fiction, this book was written for the general market. It is, however, a clean read.

My Thoughts

As I’ve come to expect, Candace Calvert has brought readers another wonderful novel. Life Support is a perfect blend of romance, medicine, family drama, and natural disaster! I felt like there was something new coming at me constantly, and while some readers may have been overwhelmed by so much going on, I really enjoyed it.

To me, the family aspects were the strongest part of this story. Lauren and her relationship with her sister and Elijah and his relationship with his brother were prominent throughout. It was nice to see this as a focus rather than a side story. Lauren and Elijah were both in very difficult situations and it was interesting to see how they both coped.

Fans of medical dramas, romance, and family stories will enjoy Life Support. Be sure to check it out! [5 stars]

My Thoughts

Holy Night is another fun story from Colleen Coble! Although I haven't read the other books in the Aloha Reef series, I was able to jump right in and really enjoyed getting to know Bane, Leia, Eva, and their friends/family. Bane and Leia seemed like such a "power" couple, and I was excited to see how they would respond to everything that was thrown at them. With that said, I was a little disappointed with Bane's reaction to a few things. It just seemed ... insensitive! (Perhaps reading the rest of the series will help me understand better!) 

If you're looking for a quick read with a little romance and a little mystery, I'd recommend Holy Night. And I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this series! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

What a fun story! I really liked Bree ... she just seemed so down-to-earth and a little feisty. My kind of woman! The mystery part of the story happened pretty quickly (but the book is only 80 pages!), but it was still an intriguing plot.

I really enjoyed the secondary story as well, which revolved around the relationship between an adoptive mom, a birth mom, and the baby given up for adoption several years prior. It was just a sweet story and really made me think. 

If you've read the rest of the Rock Harbor series, I think you'll enjoy this story. If you haven't read the other books in the series (like me!), Silent Night provides a nice introduction to the characters. I'm very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series ... and soon! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I never know what to expect from a novella. Will the story feel incomplete? Will it be too short? Will it come off as a bit cheesy? I'm often surprised (pleasantly), but Tricia Goyer's Christmas novella, A Christmas Gift for Rose, blew me away! If it gives you any indication, I plowed through that sweet story in a day. A day!

Every time I read a book by Tricia Goyer, I'm amazed by the level of emotion her writing evokes from me. In this story I definitely felt a wide range of emotions—from frustration and sorrow to sympathy and hope. Also, I was impressed by how well she developed each character. At the end of this 192 pages, I felt as though I had truly gotten to know each of the characters. Additionally, this isn't just a simple, sweet Christmas story. Tricia uses this story to talk about tough topics like adoption, what truly makes a family, struggles of soldiers returning home from war, and the need for solid faith in God.

As is true with many books, I wasn't quite ready to put the book down when I finished, but I loved every minute spent with the Rose and her family. I've already thought of several others who are sure to enjoy this book, and I'm thinking this might be the perfect addition to a Christmas gift! [5 stars]

My Thoughts

I don't read a ton of Amish fiction and am super selective when I do. The premise of Plain Peace intrigued me. For some reason, I don't often think of the Amish as being plagued with family problems. I suppose it has to do with the simple lives they lead. But Plain Peace looks at the problems that two Amish families are facing. Anna struggles with an overly strict grandfather—whom she finds out many of the others in their community either fear or dislike. Jacob's family is wrestling with the repercussions of a terrible tragedy and are trying to rebuild their lives. Anna and Jacob form a special friendship as they both face these difficulties.

I especially liked the two main characters—Anna and Jacob. They're each caught between feelings of loyalty toward their family and the desire for things to change. On the cusp of adulthood, they must figure out how to determine the two. I thoroughly enjoyed Plain Peace and heartily recommend it! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

Two-hundred-and-twenty-four pages isn't a ton of space to develop a full story, complete with a full-blown mystery and romance. Lynette Eason managed to pull it off, though, and Hide and Seek is an enjoyable story. While I figured out earlier in the book who the kidnapper was, I enjoyed trying to figure out why he/she kidnapped Erica's daughter. Erica and Max made for an interesting combination. They both have quite a few family problems, and their relationship just complicates things even further. As their relationship progressed, I was happy to see how they each grew and became better people. The ending is sweet, and the epilogue made me wish for more stories about Erica and Max so we can see how their relationship continues to grow. [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I LOVED this book … possibly my favorite in the Cooper Creek series so far. Gage makes for a dashing hero, and I enjoyed watching him have to really work to get a girl's attention. :) Layla is such a sweetheart, and I felt bad for the constant struggles she faced. I have a hard time asking for help, too, so I really identified with that aspect of her personality. Perhaps there's a good lesson for me in her story. Every time I read about the Coopers, I wish I had a gigantic family like that. Don't get me wrong, I love my small family, but there's something so appealing about a family with a dozen siblings and spouses and children all piled in together for the holidays. The power of a good story, I guess! [4.5 stars]

Brenda Minton lives in the Ozarks with her husband, three children, a horse, a few cats and a couple of dogs. What she says about herself probably isn't as important as what others say. Her daughter says she is "coffee crazy." She isn't afraid to share that news with complete strangers. Her middle son thinks she is really embarrassing when she wears fuzzy pink slippers to pick him up at school. Her oldest son doesn't comment. He's a smart kid.

Brenda is a country girl who loves to travel. Her dream home is a house on the beach, waves crashing against the shore and a deck where she can have coffee and watch the sun come up.

My Thoughts

The story sounded promising with Sara's past as a foster child who suffered abuse at the hands of her foster parents and Kyle's recent injury serving in Afghanistan. The setting of a quaint little town in Manitoba, Canada was so amazing that I've added that part of Canada to my "must see" travel list! And while I certainly liked Kyle and Sara and the surrounding the Lives Under Construction group home, I found that the problems with the book prevented me from getting lost in the story.

Sara's characterization was both inconsistent and unbelievable. She alternated from being so naive that she came across as stupid (at times) to showing great wisdom and confidence. Sometimes this happened between chapters, sometimes between paragraphs. There were also things about character that were altogether unbelievable. Regardless of the circumstances of her childhood, I find it hard to believe that a 22-year-old woman doesn't know how to use a computer. Surely at some point during the five-year gap between leaving foster care, going to cooking school, and arriving in Churchill, Manitoba, she had the opportunity to use a computer, right?! Additionally, the budding romance between Kyle and Sara had a few missteps as well. In one scene, the two went from having a serious moment, to fighting, to going back home. Then at home, it was as though the fight never happened. This happened multiple times. Issues were so quickly resolved in the last few pages, that I was frustrated by the need for more ... a lot more.

I alternated between wanting to like this story and being frustrated by the pitfalls. In the end, though, the pitfalls stacked up too quickly and affected my overall enjoyment of the book. [2.5 stars]

My Thoughts

To be totally honest, I had mixed feelings about Grace's Pictures by Cindy Thomson while I read it, and I’m still having difficulty deciding what I feel now—even as I write this review.

Initially, I thought I would absolutely love the book. The descriptions of Grace’s initial experiences in America—New York City, Ellis Island, the immigration process, and trying to find her “place” in this new country—were incredible. It felt so realistic to me. The story moved quickly at first, as Grace finds a place to live, is introduced to other immigrants, and is given a job as a nanny.

However, partway into the book, the story began to drag, and my interest wavered. Part of my struggle was that the two main characters (Grace and Owen) had little interaction with each other. That went on for so long that there eventual “relationship” seemed a bit forced to me. Additionally, the mobster story that took center stage for much of the book was just odd and extremely confusing to me at times.

Finally, Grace constantly repeated a saying that her mother told her as a child: “You are smart. You are important. You are able.” Ring any bells? It’s VERY close to the line that is repeated through the 2009 best seller The Help: “You is kind. You is smart. You is important.” It was a little too close, in my opinion.

While not my favorite, this book does present a very well-rounded story. You get to see Grace and Owen’s lives as a 360 picture, rather than merely one- or two-dimensional. Their home life, work life, family, friends, and past all play important parts of their story, which was nice to see. [3.5 stars]

My Thoughts

Author Arlene James brings readers the first book in a multi-author series about the town of Bygones, Kansas. As everyone comes together to try to save the dying town, Love in Bloom presents a sweet story of hope, friendship, and faith in the impossible.

This book was an enjoyable read in the midst of a long week. The characters definitely have their flaws, but I enjoyed every minute spent reading about their efforts to save the town and—as an added bonus—discover a few things about themselves! Lily is struggling to come into her own. Tate's struggling to free himself from past hurts. And his precocious daughter is a sneaky little matchmaker who just wants a mommy. It's a combination that I'm a sucker for. :)

The book is a fairly typical Love Inspired book … not quite long enough to go as deep or give me all the details I crave, but I appreciated the book just the same. I'm looking forward to reading more in this mini-series! [4 stars]

My Thoughts
I'm a little new to the military suspense genre. I've heard wonderful things about Ronie Kendig's talent for story-telling, so I decided it was high time to check her out. Although, I'm not a huge dog lover (don't hate me!), I thought Trinity sounded like an interesting book. The story was great! I liked Heath from the very beginning. He's struggling to figure out what to do with his life after suffering a traumatic brain injury and jumps at the chance to go back to Afghanistan—even if it's simply to talk to the troops. All of his challenges seemed so realistic, and I had such compassion for him! Darci was a unique character as well. It took me a while to warm up to her, but once I did, I loved her! The back and forth between Heath and Darci and the action-packed story made for a great read!

There were a few things that kept me from completely falling in love with the story. One, the vast number of characters! I had a really hard time keeping everyone straight—even more so because many of the characters went by multiple names. The Chinese operatives had such similar names (some even overlapping between first and last name!) ... it was too much for me to keep straight. The story also jumped through so many different people's perspectives that I often found myself having to go back to re-read to refresh what was actually going on; the transitions were not clear. Finally, I found the background story to be a little convoluted. I eventually gave up trying to figure it out and just focused on the current happenings, which helped me keep moving.

Even with these "negatives", the good out-weighed the bad and I enjoyed the book! I will definitely read other books by this author. Now I just have to decide which one to read next! [3.5 stars]

My Thoughts
Love Inspired novels used to be my guilty pleasure, so I decided to pick up a few recently for review. Her Surprise Sister by Marta Perry didn't disappoint. Slightly unbelievable at times—with look-alike women stumbling upon one another in a coffee shop only to realize they're twins—I still got totally caught up in this sweet, romantic read. I'm intrigued about the rest of the family members' stories and hope to be able to read the other books in the series. [4 stars]

My Thoughts
Lakeside Family by Lisa Jordan was a thoroughly enjoyable story. There's something about a couple who has been torn apart and find their way back to each other that just calls to me. :) Josie Peretti's fierce independence was easy to identify with. I appreciated the lesson about trusting God and allowing others to help that Jordan wove throughout the book. It wasn't overly preachy but the message came through loud and clear. Some of the characters were apparently carry-overs from a previous book, but this book stands on its own quite well. This was a great first read (for me) from Lisa Jordan. [4 stars]

My Thoughts
Relentless Pursuit by Kathy Herman was a solid conclusion to the Secrets of Roux River series. One of my favorite aspects of this series has been how the characters from previous books play such vital roles in subsequent ones. They’re not just fringe characters making spotty appearances. Instead, I felt like I really got to know them and saw how they grew, changed, and struggled throughout the entire series. Because of this, I would definitely recommend reading them in order (although you could probably catch up pretty quickly if you didn’t.)

Kathy is fairly unique in that she combines emotional family plots with tight, fast-paced suspense. The mystery around the cyanide poisoning was incredibly fascinating. Herman is a wonderful suspense writer, and I was thoroughly impressed with the intensity of this “case.” And because of this, I will definitely be on the lookout for more suspense from Kathy Herman in the future.

At times, I was annoyed by the repetitive nature of some of the conversations. I realize that the author was using this technique to show that the characters were really struggling with a particular issue, but at times it felt like the same conversation was merely pasted in multiple places in the book.

Overall, I truly enjoyed Kathy Herman’s latest offering. I’m a little sad to leave Les Barbes behind, but I know that wherever’s next will be just as good! [4 stars]

My Thoughts
A Texan's Honor, the second installment of The Heart of a Hero series, was just as good as I expected! The author gives readers quite the intro with a train robbery, murder, and hostages, and it continues to get better from there. Regardless of the fact that Will is part of the gang that held up the train, Jamilyn feels a connection to him and trusts him to help her. She knows it's a huge risk to believe in Will but feels she has no other option.

Shelley Gray delivers a wonderful book, and I loved the mix of romance and action. At times, I couldn't quite figure out where the story was going, but each time, the author filled in the gaps and brought everything together. She also wove together two stories—those of Will and Jamilyn and of Scout Proffitt. After getting to know Scout a bit, I'm hoping he will be featured in the next book in the series (and that we'll get to connect with Clayton again too!). Historical romance fans will be thrilled with A Texan's Honor! [# stars]

My Thoughts
Always the Designer, Never the Bride was the perfect light-hearted read I was looking for. Bricker is an amazingly talented writer—blending romance, quirks, depth, and humor for a story that was highly entertaining. I loved "visiting" the Tanglewood Inn again and reading more about the fun characters that I met in Always the Wedding Planner. As much as I enjoyed that book, I thought Always the Designer was even better. I'm not sure if it was because we got to follow up with repeat characters or if I just connected with Audrey more. The friendships between Audrey and the other characters reminded me of what a great blessing friends are! I also loved the romance between Audrey and JR, which was a bit of a whirlwind yet somehow believable. I also liked that there were several interesting story lines taking place simultaneously—Carly's wedding, the romance with JR, the friendships, and Audrey's career drama. It seemed that there was always something going on, moving the book along fairly quickly. If you're looking for laughs, romance, or just a fun read, this is it! I can't wait for the final book in the series! [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts
After reading First Date and Starring Me, I am a huge fan of Krista McGee! In Starring Me, we follow Kara's story as she has the opportunity to audition to be the co-host of a new teen show. She's determined to get the role, but must beat out nine other contestants for the part. Living with the other girls presents a variety of challenges, but Kara leans on her friendship with Addy and wisdom from the house mother. When a family crisis interrupts the auditions, Kara is sure she will have to sacrifice her dream. Only God can work out the details, but will Kara trust Him to?

What a wonderful book! The story is fun and the characters are realistic (despite their fame) and the kind of people you would want to be friends with. One of the things I loved most about Starring Me was how McGee was so intentional about including the gospel throughout the book without compromising the story or creating super-cheesy characters and dialogue.

There was one instance where Kara was asking Addy questions about God and I thought the entire conversation was just brilliant! Teenagers who read this novel will be able to see that it can be easy and natural to talk about God with your friends. I also appreciated how the author handled the "romance" aspect of the book—and particularly dealt with a Christian and non-Christian being interested in one another.

Readers who enjoy sweet romance and fun stories will surely love Starring Me, and I have no reservations (at all!) about recommending this to younger readers.

My Thoughts
Having read several of Randy Singer's legal thrillers, I can honestly say he's become a favorite author, and The Last Plea Bargain may be the best one yet! Jamie Brock is a prosecutor now and is known for refusing to cut deals with criminals. However, when a criminal defense attorney is arrested for murder, he unites the prisoners and shuts down the legal system. Jamie must begin making deals in order to get the rest of the system back on track. And when her father's murderer's attorney claims an innocent man is headed toward the death chamber, everything she begins questioning everything she believes.

Singer delivers a brilliant legal thriller. It's not often that I can't figure out where the story is going, but he kept me guessing until the very end. The characters were well-developed, and the story was intricate. I also enjoy how the author uses his novels to highlight social issues and makes me think about things in a new light. I highly recommend to anyone who loves suspense or legal thrillers! And if you've never read the genre, this would be a great introduction! [5 stars]

My Thoughts
I read the second book in the Songbird series when it came out last January. I finally had the chance to pick up Love Lifted Me, the conclusion over the weekend and was NOT disappointed.

After months apart, Max returns to Whisper Hollow to repair his marriage and father his two-year-old son. Jade struggles with trusting the changes she sees in Max, and Max vows to remain patient. As they attempt to find their rhythm, Max is offered the chance of a lifetime—as a high-school football coach in Texas. Alone in a new place with a new dream for their future, Max and Jade encounter one challenge after another—threatening their marriage, their family, and their new life.

As I began reading, I wished I had a better memory of how the previous book ended. A few pages in, though, I was completely caught up. I appreciated how the authors wrote the back story into the novel while still moving the current story along. Max and Jade's story was so realistic and one I think many readers will be able to relate to in one way or another. Who hasn't been let down by someone they love? Or made choices they later regretted?

I'm a huge football fan, so of course, I loved that aspect of the story—especially the relationships that Jade and Max developed with the players. Coaches should take an interest in their players' lives and care about more than just wins or losses, and that was one of the great lessons of this book.

Love Lifted Me lived up to every expectation I had. Romantic, emotional, funny, and full of redemption. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent reading it and was sorry to reach the end. I highly recommend this beautiful series (but read them in order!) and hope to see more from the authors soon! [5 stars]

My Thoughts
I started this book a while back and planned to read this on my Nook while working out at the gym. I quickly realized that reading isn't something I can do at the gym because my hatred for working out spills over to my impression of the book. Oops! I set the book aside and picked it up a few days ago only to find that I really liked this book!

Red reluctantly marries Cassie immediately following the burial of her husband. Only days into the marriage, Red realizes that everything he assumed about Cassie is wrong. His compassion for her wins out and he vows to make this marriage of convenience a real marriage that works for both of them. Cassie only wants to stay out of trouble and make Red happy. Will they be able to overcome all that stands between them and find love?

What a wonderful introduction to Mary Connealy! Montana Rose is hilarious at times and suspenseful and romantic at other times. The escapades that Red and Cassie go through while Cassie is learning to take care of the animals are reminiscent of the Amelia Bedelia books I read as a child and had me rolling. It was interesting to get both perspectives on the same events and see just how different their thinking was. Connealy also provided a realistic picture of ranch life in the late 1800s. I never thought about what it would be like to have a baby in those times! I enjoyed this light-hearted, hope-filled story and am interested to read the rest of the series.  [4 stars]
