My Thoughts
This classic story has been recommended to me multiple times over the years, yet somehow I've never made the time for it. I wish I had because the story itself is a beautiful allegory that is easy to apply to daily life. There are so many messages and themes that could be pulled out of the story, but ultimately, it's a story about walking with Jesus and relying on God instead of yourself.

This particularly version is stunning. I mean, absolutely beautiful. The illustrations really added to the story, and I loved the Scripture added throughout. I also appreciated the journaling spaces and questions. It helped me process what I was reading and gave the story a more personal feel. I highly recommend for gift giving or personal use. I'll read this book again.  [5 stars]

My Thoughts
Cute, rhyming book that helps kids count to 10, learn body parts, and hear the truth that they are uniquely made by God! A few verses are sprinkled throughout as well to support the ideas stated in the text. I also LOVED that the kids pictured on the pages all look different from one another. I can find one who looks like me, and my daughter can find one who looks like her, and others who read this book can too! This would be a great addition to any child's library. [5 stars]

My Thoughts
We are really enjoying this storybook Bible! We read a little each night, so it's nice to have a book that will last for a while! I do think the daily readings are a little shorter than we prefer, so we typically read two each night. However, the B&H Kids Editorial Team does a wonderful job including as much detail as possible from the actual Bible, yet putting it in words that a kid is more likely to understand. My husband and I have commented several times that we feel like this reads more like a true Bible than a "Bible story," which we feel will be important as our little one grows up. I also appreciate that they chose to include so many stories that shorter books don't typically have room for. It seems like you're able to go a little deeper rather than simply hitting the highlights.

Our little one is technically too young for this book now, but we feel it's important to start family devotions early. We'll be pulling this book out again and again over the years. [5 stars]

I've become such a huge fan of Advent over the past few years. It's HARD to focus on Jesus when there is so much ELSE going on around us. That's true for any time of the year, but it seems to be especially true at Christmas.

The Wonder of Advent provides a devotional moment for your busy day. Take a break, read a short passage of Scripture, and get a glimpse of the deeper story through the author's devotional writing. Each day's reading is short enough to squeeze in regardless of what else is going on, but long enough to cause you to pause and think about the true meaning of Christmas. I liked the questions that were included at the end of each day. These would be beneficial for personal journaling or family discussion, depending on which you prefer. This will be a book I pull out year after year. [5 stars]

My Thoughts
What a cute book! I haven't read the original "Flash" memoir for adults, but I thought this children's book was too cute to ignore. The illustrations are simple yet beautiful. And the story of friendship and learning to make friends is one that all readers can benefit from. I enjoyed meeting the other animals along Flash's journey and appreciated the author's ability to tell a story and teach valuable lessons without being "preachy" or "cheesy." I'm adding this one to my daughter's bookshelf so we can enjoy it for years to come. [5 stars]

My Thoughts
I've been a fan of Francine Rivers' novels for years, so I was curious what a devotion book by her would be like. And I was not disappointed!

Earth Psalms is a weekly devotion that will take you through the entire year. I loved how Rivers looks to nature to show different aspects of God's character. For example, we can see God's faithfulness in the sunrise and sunset occurring every day. As I read the devotional, I noticed myself paying attention to everyday things, seeing them with new eyes, and reflecting on who God is. Inevitably, I also found myself sharing that week's devotion with a friend. The concepts were just so easy to remember and share!

I enjoyed the weekly format of this devotional because it was easy to add to my other Bible studies since many of them are only 5 days per week. I've already given this as a gift and highly recommend this to anyone looking for a place to start studying God's Word. [5 stars]

My Thoughts

I'm a fan of both Regina Scott and marriage of convenience stories, so A Convenient Christmas Wedding is a double win for me. The author dives into the story, and I was intrigued from the very first chapter. 

I particularly enjoyed the growth of the female heroine, Nora. This is most definitely a romance, but Nora does a lot of growing up too. She learns to stand on her own two feet and even has her new husband questioning where the wallflower, scared woman went, mere hours after their wedding takes place. 

This is a perfect book for readers who enjoy frontier settings, marriage of convenience stories, feisty women, and sweet romance. Highly recommend! [5 stars]

About the Author

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn't actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and plot. After numerous short stories and articles in magazines and trade journals, she got serious about her novel writing. The Unflappable Miss Fairchild was her first novel to be published (March 1998).

Besides her novels, Regina Scott has had published three Regency novellas ("The June Bride Conspiracy" in His Blushing Bride, "Sweeter Than Candy" in A Match for Mother, and "A Place by the Fire" in Mistletoe Kittens). Two of her novels, A Dangerous Dalliance and The Twelve Days of Christmas, have been translated into German. A Dangerous Dalliance and The Incomparable Miss Compton have been translated into Italian. Starstruck and Perfection have been translated into Dutch.

Regina Scott and her husband are the parents of two sons. They reside in the Tri-Cities of southeast Washington State and are members of the Church of the Nazarene. My Thoughts
Every time I read a book by one of my favorite authors, I'm always hopeful that the newest book will live up to my expectations. I'm thrilled to say that Always Watching surpassed every expectation that I had for a new book from Lynette Eason. So what did I love so much about the book?

1. A strong female lead. It seems that the majority of suspense fiction features a strong male lead with a damsel in distress who needs rescuing. I certainly enjoy many of those stories, but it was nice to read a story featuring the female lead as the "rescuer." Plus, it added a great dynamic where the male lead needed to be protected but also wanted to do the protecting. Lots of tension there!

2. Intriguing relationships. Because of the tension between the protector and the protectee, it made the development of the relationships very interesting. I also enjoyed meeting Wade's daughter and seeing her struggle through the craziness that unfolded around her.

3. True suspense. At any given time, I had 4-5 suspects. Every time that I thought I knew who the "bad guy" was, I quickly realized I was wrong and began to rethink things. And no one was "cleared" until the very end when the culprit was revealed.

4. Strong faith element. Wade was an excellent witness of true Christian faith. Through conversations and the way he lived his life during extremely trying circumstances, his faith was evident to everyone around him.

Overall, I thought this was an amazing book. I honestly thought it was Lynette's best yet and am looking forward to reading the next books in the series! [5 stars]

My Thoughts
What a great book! It may be my favorite of Calvert’s so far! While this falls under the category of “medical suspense,” there’s a greater emphasis on the suspense and romance. Many of the characters are crisis chaplains, which is a unique role to see in a book. Perhaps a greater emphasis on helping people after a tragedy or trauma would decrease the fallout we’re seeing in this crazy world.

Macy and Fletcher were amazing leading characters. They’re both tough but have some baggage that needs to be dealt with. I especially enjoyed Macy as a character. She’s a great example of what happens when God is at work in your life. I readers will find ways (even small ones) to relate to Macy.

Love this book and recommend it highly! [5 stars]

What's better than a great Bible story? Two great Bible stories for the price of one! And when the stories are really close to the stories as presented in the Bible (even using some of the same language and phrases), that's even better!

I really liked the format of this book as well. The coloring page for each story as well as the elements on each page for the child to color are sure to keep kids' minds engaged. And the parent connection for each story is great for helping parents talk with their kids further about the story and the truths that can be applied to each person's life.

I'll be on the lookout for the other titles in this series. These would be a great addition to every young reader's library! [5 stars]

My Thoughts
How Big Is Love? is a padded board book that is perfect for small children. I loved the message of this book—that nothing (!!!) is bigger or more anything than God's love! What a great message to read to and with babies and young children.

The language is simple enough for toddlers, yet succinctly tells a bigger story. The illustrations are whimsical. And the construction of the book is perfect for little hands (thick pages definitely won't tear easily).

This is one of the best children's books that I've read recently, and I'll be watching for the rest of the series! [5 stars]

My Thoughts
I'm always looking for new books that will help kids grow in their relationship with God, and The Big Picture Interactive Bible Story Devotional is a resource I can recommend. The book is divided up into 52 short devotions for elementary-age kids. Each devotion is divided up into several sections: a one-page devotion, a short "augmented reality" clip that they can watch and hear using the mobile app, a passage of Scripture, questions for further thought, a video clip, and more. While it's intended for children to use on their own, I can see how this could also be used in family worship or even in homeschooling. One "devotion" could easily be stretched into a week's worth of discussions.

The devotions themselves are short, easy to read, and straightforward. If read in order, they will take a child through the entire Bible, showing how the Bible tells one complete story. This is something that I've only learned as an adult, so I love the emphasis on teaching children from a young age.

I definitely recommend this devotion and will confidently give it to the littles in my life. [5 stars]

My Thoughts

A Love Like Ours combines some of my favorite plot elements in a novel—reuniting childhood friends, all things cowboy/horses, siblings, a military hero, and some sort of trauma or difficulty that keeps resurfacing. It's like Becky Wade KNOWS me or something! [wink] But seriously, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent with this story.

I'm really loving this Porter family. While each book focuses on one specific sibling, the others pop up from time to time. When Jake needs a "kick in the pants," his siblings are right there ready to encourage him (or shove him) out of his comfort zone. And Jake really is an amazing guy. Of course, the trauma he's experienced affects just about everything in his life, but throughout the story, he's struggling and working to move past it.

And Lyndie is great. She's passionate and fun and such a great friend. I loved her interactions with Jake (of course!), but it was also fun to see her friendship with Amber and her son blossom. Amber's dating challenge was also a funny, light-hearted element that I appreciated since much of the book is a little more serious. I could give them a run for their money on some of those dating stories! 

I loved this book! Great characters, strong faith elements, and a plot that provided more than just a simple romance story. What more could you want?! [5 stars]

My Thoughts

I honestly think that every one of Colleen Coble's books is better than the last. She's gifted us with books in several genres, but my favorites are her suspense novels. And The Inn at Ocean's Edge is a definite winner!

From the very first chapter, the book is chock full of suspenseful happenings—missing people, murder, kidnapping, assault, and more. When you add in the more personal elements of the story, it really does feel like a double episode of your favorite TV drama, and somehow it all works together. 

It's hard to identify a favorite element of the story, but for me, it's probably a tie between characters and setting. Luke and Claire seem as different as any two protagonists, but they keep bumping into each other and find they have more in common than they initially thought. He's so considerate and compassionate—despite his own personal drama throughout the book—toward Claire, and it really adds to his charm. Claire comes on as this strong, confident character that is quickly shaken to the core as one thing after the other strips away everything she knew to be true of her life. They really balance each other out.

And then the setting . . . Maine! I've been dreaming of a trip to Maine for the last year, so it was interesting to read about this place I've been researching and dreaming about. Coble works in a few traditional Maine experiences (lobster rolls, anyone?!), which gives readers a bit of a vacation via novel experience. 

I pretty much loved everything about this book. I found myself reading LATE into the night and rising early to get in a few more pages before work. You know it's a good book when even sleep is trumped! If you're looking for a summer read, I highly recommend The Inn at Ocean's Edge! [5 stars]

My Thoughts
Told in her signature style—with plenty of parenthesis and all caps!— Home Is Where My People Are is another hilarious book from Sophie Hudson. Sophie tells some great stories (she’s southern after all!), but she doesn’t simply rely on being fun. Instead, she uses these stories to tell her life’s story as well as make the reader think a little more his or her own story. After reading about Sophie’s family and friends, I found myself wanting to hug mine a little tighter, grateful for the gift they are to me.

I love all things Sophie Hudson (The Big Boo Cast, anyone?!), and Home Is Where My People Are is no exception. Snag a copy today and prepare yourself to laugh and hopefully learn a little something about yourself. [5 stars]

My Thoughts

What a wonderful idea! I love receiving letters and enjoy sending letters. And it's not just me. Hubs' first comment when he saw what I was looking at was, "Will you write me a letter?" Of course I will! However, I often feel like I don't have a lot to say. Kind of funny for a blogger, yeah?  This all-in-one stationery provides 40 writing prompts, which are creative and could be used for a variety of people in your life—friends, spouse, parents, children, random strangers! The designs are beautiful. The paper is high-quality (and I'm a paper snob!). And the concept is just perfect. Everything you need to write a letter is right at your fingertips . . . all you need is a stamp and a pen. So no more excuses! [5 stars]

The Drop Box (A Movie Review)

I went tonight with some girls in my small group to see a movie called The Drop Box. I immediately came home and emailed a ton of people to tell them they just HAD to go see this incredible movie. And if it's good enough to share with my contact list, it's surely good enough for me to post about over here, isn't it?!

The Drop Box is only in theaters March 3-5, which means that THURSDAY (either tomorrow or today, depending on when you're reading this) is the last day you'll be able to see it. Please, please, please do not miss this movie!

About the Movie

The Drop Box tells the story of South Korean pastor Lee Jong-rak and his heroic efforts to embrace and protect the most vulnerable members of society. It is a heart-wrenching exploration of the physical, emotional and financial toll associated with providing refuge to orphans that would otherwise be abandoned on the streets. But The Drop Box movie is also a story of hope—a reminder that every human life is sacred and worthy of love.

South Korea is not the only country grappling with the issue of orphan care. Around the world, there are more than 150 million orphans waiting for forever families to call their own.

An award-winning feature-length documentary, The Drop Box will be released as a theater event across the nation for three nights only on March 3, 4, and 5, 2015. Audiences will learn of Pastor Lee’s story, how he one day came upon a newborn who has been abandoned on a cold night in a Seoul alley. That experience prompts him to build a “baby box” at the front of his church—a warm, safe place where desperate mothers can leave babies that would otherwise be abandoned. Many of the babies who are left in Pastor Lee’s baby box have developmental or physical impediments.

After the movie screening, audiences will watch a group discussion featuring the film’s director Brian Ivie; musician Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth; and Focus on the Family President Jim Daly addressing issues related to adoption, orphan care, and the sanctity of human life. A portion of the film’s proceeds goes to support the ministry of Pastor Lee.

My Thoughts

The Drop Box is a documentary about a pastor in South Korea who has installed a "drop box" where people can leave their babies instead of abandoning them on the streets, where they are likely to die before they are found. I was heartbroken to hear stories of men and women who can't take care of babies born with severe disabilities. Young girls are especially vulnerable around the world, and the intense shame they feel upon learning they are pregnant often leads to suicidal thoughts. God gave Pastor Lee a vision for giving people a safe place to give up their children. No, it's not a perfect solution, not even close! But God is using Pastor Lee, his "drop box," the church in South Korea, and a host of volunteers to save the lives of hundreds of babies.

After volunteering in an orphanage for several months following my college graduation, anything about orphan care is understandably near and dear to my heart. However, my enthusiasm for the movie is about much more than a passion for the subject. The movie was incredibly well made, and  the message was powerful. It's a hopeful story about a family's complete dependence on God to care for whoever comes across their path. The overarching theme of the movie is the truth that every life is valuable. 

I watched the entire movie with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. If you don't have plans tomorrow evening (Thursday, March 5), please go see this movie! [5+ stars]

My Thoughts

When I first heard the premise for The Husband Maker series, I knew this could be a huge hit. After reading all three books, I can say with certainty that I was right!

The Wife Maker is the third installment in this unique series. (The books definitely need to be read in order!) After getting to know Charlotte in the first two books and being heartbroken (twice!), I came into this book needing (!!!) Charlotte to get her happy ending. I knew based on the title that surely it would happen, but Karey White doesn't just give it to us. No, Charlotte (and the readers) certainly had to work for it.

Based on where the previous two books took us, I wasn't sure that there would be sufficient tension to really warrant a third installment. Let me assure you, I was wrong on that note. The Wife Maker was equal parts drama and romance, and I was anxious to see exactly how everything would end.

I've been thoroughly impressed with this entire series, and The Wife Maker is the perfect conclusion. I can't wait to see what Karey White has up her sleeve next! [5 stars]

Sneak Peek

We walked in silence to the elevator. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Only eight days until you leave.” I kept my eyes anchored on the changing numbers above the door, pretending I didn’t know he was leaving sooner than he’d told me.

“Actually, I’m leaving Monday.”

“You are?”

“I had to pay rent for the whole month of August, so I decided I might as well go a little earlier and get settled in before I get so busy.”

“Oh. That makes sense.”

The elevator doors opened and a man with a bundle of perfectly behaved balloons stepped off.

“You haven’t forgotten dinner, I hope.” I pushed the button for the lobby.

“Charlotte, I just—”

“No, Angus.” I hoped my voice didn’t sound as desperate as I felt. “Please don’t say you can’t.” He didn’t say anything. “Please.”

Angus sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Tomorrow night?”

My heart broke a little at his response. He didn’t sound happy at all. He sounded like someone ready to plow through an unpleasant task to get it over with. My pride wanted to tell him to forget the whole thing, but I didn’t. How could I change his mind if I didn’t see him?

“Tomorrow’s great,” I said with enough enthusiasm for both of us.

“Luigi’s?”

“No way. Neither of us need therapy.” That was a lie. “Let’s go somewhere different. Since you’re leaving, let me surprise you. It’ll be fun.”

“I’ll drive. I don’t feel like contorting myself into your car.” Angus smiled. It was so lovely, I felt a clutch in my stomach.

We stepped out into the angled, evening sunshine and hesitated on the sidewalk. “Where’s your car?” Angus asked.

“It’s over there.”

“Do you want me to walk you?”

“That’s okay, it’s still light.” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, I wanted to take them back. I needed to take advantage of every minute I had with him.

“All right. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“See you.”

Angus didn’t move when I started walking away. I crossed the road and found my car in the visitor parking lot. I glanced back to see which way Angus had gone, but he was still standing there watching me. It wasn’t until I waved that he turned and walked away.

My Thoughts

I think it's safe to say that The Dandelion Field is unlike any other book I've read recently, maybe ever. There are essentially two main stories running concurrently. One focuses on Raine and Cody and their unintended teenage pregnancy. The other focuses on Gin and Dan as adults who care about these teenagers in trouble, struggling with their own baggage, and possibly falling in love. There's a lot packed into these 350 pages, but Kathryn Springer pulls it off easily.

The characters are fascinating. With four main characters and a decent-sized supporting cast, it would be easy to assume that they would be fairly simple or one-dimensional. Fortunately for us, the author does a phenomenal job of creating a full cast of characters that are real. They each have traits that made me love them, as well as flaws that made them human and baggage that made the story more interesting.

From the very first page until well after I finished the book, I could not stop thinking about this story. It's beautiful, and I loved that the author faced some really difficult topics head on. Additionally, faith is central to the story and is a perfect complement to every aspect of the book.

The Dandelion Field is a compelling story that tackles tough issues with humor, romance, and faith. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. In my opinion, it's a must read! [5 stars]
