My Thoughts
Friendship is something every woman craves, yet doesn't come naturally to most of us. Despite "making friends" being a skill we learned in kindergarten, it's something that we must work out throughout our entire lives.

I appreciated Lisa-Jo Baker's honest approach to friendship in her book Never Unfriended. She shared personal experiences of times when she wasn't a good friend as well as times when she was. I feel I learned as much (or more) from her "bad friend" experiences as I did from the "lessons" she was sharing. This book was practical and I feel it will help me as I continue to develop friendships that I've had for years, along with steps I can take to ensure I start new friendships on the right foot. I recommend this book to anyone hoping to be a better friend (which I hope is all of us!).

My Thoughts
This is a great, quick read for anyone about to become a parent or who has a young child. You'll probably read much of it thinking to yourself, "Of course that's true. Doesn't everyone know that?!" But it always helps to be reminded of the changes that are coming as a result of any life change. Dr. Chapman's writing style is personal and practical. He uses lots of illustrations, which makes for a quicker read. Each chapter includes several practical application type things, to help you answer the question "now what?!"  [4 stars]

My Thoughts
What a sweet story about how God created each of us uniquely—and just right for whatever we're supposed to do! I do wish that the focus had been more on character and less on physical traits (arms, legs, etc.), but it's still a great message. And very poetic. The illustrations are beautiful as well, lovely watercolors! If you're looking for a book that teaches children about how God made them, check this one out! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I confess, I have been a fan of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette since the very beginning. I've been fed up a time or two and sworn that I would never again watch, but I always get sucked back in. Of course, I was excited to see that Sean Lowe had a book out since he truly was one of the nicest people to ever be on the show. I knew there was something different about him when I watched his seasons, so I was looking forward to reading more of his story.

For the Right Reasons probably won't win awards for the best written book. BUT that doesn't mean I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. I appreciated learning more about his family, career before becoming a reality TV "star," and his personal life. I loved getting the behind-the-scenes story about the process to becoming a contestant, insider info about how the show works, and more details about the things I watched on TV. What a fun read! 

Fans of The Bachelor franchise, fans of Sean Lowe, or anyone who's curious about the inner workings of reality TV will enjoy this book. [4 stars]

My Thoughts

Ruth Logan Herne knows how to tell a story! All Dressed Up in Love introduces readers to Greg, a lawyer and the new owner of his mother's bridal shop, and Tara, a law student looking for a part-time job until she finishes school. Thankfully, they just happen to be what the other one needs during a difficult time.

The story centers primarily around the happenings of the bridal shop. We get to read about brides coming in to find their perfect wedding dress, other characters who work at the shop, and plans to revitalize and save the shop. Of course, there are sparks between the two main characters, and a bit of romance and mixed feelings help propel that aspect of the story along. While the story did conclude a little abruptly, I was satisfied with the ending and enjoyed every minute spent with Greg and Tara in All Dressed Up in Love. This is definitely one of my favorites of this year's A Year of Weddings series so far! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I love soup, and the idea of sharing soup with other families through a soup club sounds like a genius idea! The first section of the book does a great job explaining how these four families do soup club and offers suggestions for how you can do something similar with your own people. 

There are tons of recipes in this book—everything from broths and dressings to soups (duh!), a few other main dishes, sides, and snacks. Each recipe is accompanied by a few details or a story behind why it's a favorite for the club. There are also tons of helpful tips about prepping, cooking, packaging, and delivering mixed in throughout. Very practical and helpful cookbook. 

The main drawback I see is that the majority of these recipes involve a lot of steps and a lot of ingredients. I'm sure you could eliminate some of this based on whether you buy fresh or pre-packaged ingredients, but if you're hoping to simply follow a recipe as is, be prepared to spend several hours cooking.

I look forward to trying these recipes. There are several that I know now we will love. There are many others that will be more adventurous "tries" for us, but I look forward to trying these new soups and hopefully finding a few to add into our permanent rotation. Now to just find a few more families to form a soup club with! [4 stars]

After reading A Heart's Disguise, I know I'm going to thoroughly enjoy the rest of this series! This is a great introduction to the characters and community. I particularly liked Sarah and Rand. And that Ben was a total toad! Great intros to Sarah's and Rand's family and friends as well.

Although this is essentially the first sixth of a story, I got enough to capture my interest. Plus, now I seriously want to know what's going to happen between Rand, Sarah, and Ben next!

(Please note that this is the first book in a serial, so you definitely need to read them in order!)

What a great start . . . I can't wait to read more! [4 stars]

An Old Fashioned Movie Review

Well, crumb . . . I just realized this post got stuck in my drafts. Boo! While it's not at the theaters anymore, it would still make a great date night rental!

I posted a few days ago and shared some of my concerns about the movie Fifty Shades of Grey. I decided I needed to do more than simply discourage people from seeing a movie that has no redeeming qualities and needed to put my money where my mouth was. So Hubs and I cast our vote for positive, uplifting, clean, godly films by going to see Old Fashioned on Valentine's Day. I wanted to be sure to share my thoughts on the movie with y'all, so maybe you'll be encouraged to do the same!

About the Movie
A romantic-drama, OLD FASHIONED centers on Clay Walsh, a former frat boy who gives up his reckless carousing and now runs an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town. There, he has become notorious for his lofty and outdated theories on love and romance as well as for his devout belief in God. When Amber Hewson, a free-spirited young woman with a restless soul, drifts into the area and rents the apartment above his shop, she finds herself surprisingly drawn to his strong faith and noble ideas, which are new and intriguing to her. My Thoughts
Hubs and I saw the movie Old Fashioned as part of our Valentine's Day date. I was excited to see that the theater was full (there were even people sitting on the front row!). This definitely bodes well for those of you who want to see it in the next few weeks!

I can't really think of another movie to compare Old Fashioned to. It's very different from any other movie I've ever seen—even other "Christian" romance films. The pace is a bit slower. There's not a ton of "action." However, the characters develop at a steady pace, as does the romantic connection between the two leading characters. This isn't how a lot of romances develop on the big screen, but I found that I really enjoyed this different approach. By the end of the movie, I was completely giddy over the depth of the romance.

This movie was sweet and deep and tender and romantic. What a beautiful picture of a biblical way to approach dating and marriage. Have a great date night and then share this movie with your teenagers. [4 stars]

My Thoughts
With all of the talk about how love is depicted in movies and books these days, Paper Hearts was a refreshing find. The story is sweet, yet has depth (it’s not *just* a romance!). The town is obsessed with love (which I love, pun intended!). Plus, Abigail, the main character, owns a bookstore. What more could a book lover like me want? I keep seeing other bloggers use the word “heartwarming” to describe this book, and I definitely agree. Overall, this is a lovely story that I’m glad I took the time to read. I’ll be on the lookout for the author’s next novel! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

Liz Tolsma is a relatively new author. I have read her previous two novels—Snow on the Tulips and Daisies Are Forever—and greatly enjoyed them. It seems that lots of WWII novels are coming out these days, but Tolsma puts a bit of a different twist on her stories. Her stories are inspired by family members and family friends who lived through it.

As with the previous two books, I found Remember the Lilies to be very unique. I don't believe I've ever read a book set primarily within the walls of an internment camp. However, what could have been a very dark book turned out to be very hope-filled, with a strong gospel message. It's definitely not an easy read, but I was never left "down" for long.

I really enjoyed the two main characters. It was hard to imagine a romance blossoming under such dire circumstances, but the author pulled it off well. The character development was strong throughout, and I grew to like them both more and more as the story went on.

As several other reviewers have mentioned, I did wish that there was a bit more description of the camp. Unfortunately, I don't have much knowledge at all of this particular aspect of the war, so it was difficult for me to grasp. (I recently found a three-part interview with an internment camp survivor on the author's blog that shed some light on the true living conditions they experienced. Reading it would definitely be helpful in understanding the book better. Click here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.) Additionally, I felt like the book was a tad slow in a few places.

Overall, I truly enjoyed this story. It's not often that you read a wonderful story with such rich, historical detail. Fans of historical fiction are sure to enjoy Remember the Lilies.  [4 stars]

My Thoughts

As I've come to expect from Susan May Warren, Always On My Mind is equal parts romantic, poignant, and can't-put-this-down. The Christiansens are one of my favorite families right now in Christian fiction, so I was excited to dive into another story that would allow me to catch up with them again—especially after the cliff-hanger nature of the ending for the sibling stories of When I Fall in Love (the third book in the series).

Casper and Raina were both featured as secondary characters in When I Fall in Love. Casper was so sweet and an all-around good guy. I was really rooting for him and sad at how things seemed to be working out for him with all the conflict between him and his brother. Raina, too, was a girl I instantly liked. Sure, she had a ton of issues and a history of making bad choices, but there was something about her that still made her likeable. To see them get their own story was a treat!

Casper and Raina have both faced challenges since we've seen them. Casper seems to be falling apart a bit, but his return home greets him with one huge, unfortunate surprise as well as support from his family. It was nice to see how he worked so hard to prove himself as trustworthy and not just an adventure-seeker.

Raina is determined to face her new life independently of everyone else, which drove me crazy. So many people wanted to help her and she just wasn't having it. But I sort of understood why she wanted to make it on her own. Her biggest issue was that she didn't believe she deserved anything good. Of course, Casper is determined to show her otherwise!

As far as secondary stories go, Dare is featured in the book. He's starting to fold under the stress of trying to reopen the resort. I think this is one thing that I both like and dislike about this series. It's more realistic to see that characters aren't just left to lead perfect lives once they fall in love, but I hate seeing bad things happen to characters I've come to love! I felt like this story arc added depth and richness to the story, so for all my angst over Dare and Ivy, it was worth it. :)

So many issues are addressed in this book, and I loved the focus on valuing every life. Raina's difficult decision about whether to raise her baby or find an adoptive family is gut-wrenching, but I loved that this was part of the story. I felt like this theme played out with just about every character—our identity and worth is in Christ alone.

Overall, this was a wonderful book. I highly recommend Always On My Mind for readers who enjoy emotional romance stories. Just a suggestion, though, start at the beginning of the series. It will definitely be worth it to catch up! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

What a fun story! A League of Her Own is a great combination of romance, interesting characters (with lots of problems!), emotion, and baseball. The characters were well developed and multi-dimensional, which I appreciated. Yes, they had problems that affected them, but they were woven into the story so that those problems directed--but didn't take over--the story. The author did a great job at writing in an emotional way. I laughed and teared up at various points. Heather and Garrett were likeable characters, and I really enjoyed getting to know them!

I didn't even realize that this book was by Karen Rock when I started it. (Way to pay attention, right?!) I read another of her books last summer and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be watching for more of this author's work in the future! [4 stars]

NOTE: While I generally read and review Christian fiction, this book was written for the general market. It is, however, a clean read.

My Thoughts

Love Without End is another incredible story from Robin Lee Hatcher. I loved the way she wove together so many threads to bring readers one beautifully complex and moving story. Chet was probably my favorite character. I really liked him in A Promise Kept and was so glad he got his own story. After all the loss in his life, it was nice to come back and see how he was able to persevere through. The relationship between him and his sons was really special too.

I liked that Anna's story was told throughout the whole book. It really helped to have her whole history instead of just picking up with her return to the ranch. At times the switch between past and present felt a little jarring and almost felt like Anna's story could have been a prequel of sorts, but I was glad they were both included.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I'm a big fan of this series and look forward to more visits to King's Meadow! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

It's a pretty well-established fact that I'm a huge fan of all things Duck Dynasty. A Robertson Family Christmas is a bit different from the non-fiction books I've read by the various family members, but I enjoyed it just the same.

This fictional Christmas story is a quick, fun, Christmas read. The story is sweet, yet meaningful. And I felt more like I was watching several episodes of the show than reading a book. The writing was so realistic that I could hear the voices of the family members in my head as I read the dialogue. That's hard to pull off, but the authors were successful!

I recommend A Robertson Family Christmas to readers of all ages! Grab a copy and get in the Christmas spirit! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I'm a fan of anything southern (being from the South and all!) and Magnolia Market is a great southern read. While it doesn't highlight the best the south has to offer (initially, at least), it does give readers a glimpse into what "old southern money" is all about.

I liked Avery right away and found myself constantly frustrated by the things that kept happening to her. It was all just so unfair! But, alas, life is not fair ... and neither is Avery's. However, for every bad thing that is done TO her, a new friend comes along and helps her—even if it's in a totally unexpected way. I thought it was a great lesson in accepting help graciously and knowing we weren't intended to go through life on our own.

The other characters in town were a great addition to the book and helped round out the story. From eccentric and grumpy to rich and snooty to kind and generous and everything in between, we get a little bit of everything.

The middle of the book seemed to lag a bit for me, but otherwise, I truly enjoyed this book! I'm excited to read more of the Trumpet & Vine series! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I'm happy to see another book from Amber Stokes, and I have to say that How a Star Falls was a delightful read. Amber's previous books have been western historicals, and I was impressed that she managed to bring all of the things I loved about those books into a contemporary new adult story.

The story is very sweet and a bit mysterious. Derrick is an all-around nice guy who steps out of his comfort zone to befriend Brielle. I wasn't sure what to make of Brielle at first, but her sweet nature quickly overcame any reservations I had when I couldn't figure out what her "deal" was. :) Derrick's family really helped round out the story.

Amber did a wonderful job bringing the Pacific Northwest to life in this story. It's easy to tell that she loves the part of the country she calls home, and by the end, I was thinking my next vacation should be to Oregon.

How a Star Falls is another wonderful read, and I definitely recommend grabbing a copy at your earliest convenience! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

A September Bride is another enjoyable installment in the Year of Weddings series. Kathryn Springer is a new-to-me author, and I really enjoyed her writing style. She delivered a sweet romance in a lovely small town and even provided a plot that's a little different than the typical romance story (which can feel overdone at times). I loved all the tension between the two main characters at the beginning. It seemed that the town itself was possibly the best part of the story, and I would love to read more books set in Red Leaf! With all the good, my only complaint is that the novella was just a little too short and wrapped up really quickly. Overall, though, I'm a fan and I highly recommend! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

Hidden in the Stars packs a powerful punch in a relatively short number of pages! The premise is incredibly sad—Sophia left completely alone, injured, without the ability to speak after being brutally attacked in her mother's home. However, the author does a great job bringing people along to help push the story forward, solve the crime, and befriend Sophia. Sophia's trust in the Lord is refreshing, and her friendships with Charlie and Julian are an uplifting part of the story.

This book was emotional, intense, sweet, and a true roller coaster. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I will definitely be looking up more of Robin Caroll's books in the future. [4 stars]

My Thoughts

What a fun book! I mean, what's not to love about reality TV, cupcakes, and romance?! All's Fair in Love and Cupcakes is a light-hearted read with plenty of funny moments. At times, I was ready for the characters to just talk already! But that tension helped keep me interested in what would happen next. I enjoyed the interaction between the other contestants as well. It really helped give another dimension to the story. I was a smidge sad at how quickly the book wrapped up, but I'm looking forward to reading more about Lucas and Kat in Betsy's next book, which features Kat's sister. Readers who enjoy fun romantic stories should definitely check out this book! [4 stars]
