About the Book
A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie
Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one
man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing
forever.
An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life
in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him.
He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin
farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred
racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered,
especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t
accept yet cannot possibly refuse.
Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top
purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in
America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that
chance—and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest
bidder—Maggie’s father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His
agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail—Maggie must marry a man
she’s never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.
My Thoughts
If there's one name in Southern fiction that you need to know, it's Tamera Alexander. And I can say with certainty that she has wowed this reader again with her latest, To Win Her Favor.
In To Win Her Favor, Tamera brings to life a beautiful story filled with hope and redemption amidst some of the darkest times in the South—those hard years of rebuilding and reconciling a new way of life following the Civil War. She's certainly not afraid to tackle a tough subject and brings the injustice of racism and discrimination to the forefront in this novel. And all the emotions! It's certainly painful to read at times, but it's definitely worth it in the end!
I love that this book features a marriage of convenience—one of my favorite type of relationship, probably because it's so different than what typically occurs today. Cullen is such a wonderful character, and the way he constantly placed Maggie's well-being ahead of his own preferences and desires was a wonderful example of sacrificial love.
I will mention that this book is a bit more "romantic" than some others from this author. I felt that it was handled in a very tasteful way that shows the beauty of a blossoming romance between a married couple (in an arranged marriage). Personally, I didn't think there was too much detail, but I wanted to mention it so you would be aware.
To Win Her Favor was a beautiful story, and one I'm happy to recommend. [4.5 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.
