A few months ago, the 25th known Christian prisoner died in Eritrea.
Wehazit Berhane Debesai was a Christian woman in her thirties. The exact day of her death is unknown, but it was discovered that she died of pneumonia after facing harsh prison conditions and denial of medical treatment because she refused to renounce her faith.
Wehazit was doing national services when authorities arrested her over a year ago. They arrested her because she was involved in Christian activities outside of the Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical Lutheran church groups.
At the same time, the government arrested a large number of Christians gathered for prayer. Government security officials arrested 70 Christians belonging to various denominations in the capital Asmara (27 were women). The arrest came as the Christians gathered for a special prayer gathering. It was the third time the pastor leading the prayer event has been imprisoned for his Christian activities.
