About the Book
When her prodigal brother Reef's return to Yancey, Alaska, is shattered by his arrest for murder, Piper McKenna is determined to protect him.
Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he's also sworn to find the truth. And he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth puts Landon's career in jeopardy.
When Piper launches her own investigation, Landon realizes he must protect her from herself--and whatever complications await as the two follow clues deep into Canada's rugged backcountry. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.
My Thoughts
I'll admit. I'm a bit ADHD when it comes to the books I read. I don't like getting stuck in a rut, so I switch up authors and genres often. However, after reading Dani Pettrey's debut novel last month (finally!), I knew I had to read Shattered ASAP, so I did. And I was just as impressed with it as I was with Submerged!
I loved reading more about the McKenna family and was especially glad to be able to spend more time with Piper, who I loved in the previous book. I also liked that Cole and Bailey were still such prominent characters, without stealing the show. I was a little confused by some of the things Landon did early on in the book—a few of his actions seemed out of character from what I knew of him in Submerged.
Shattered reads a lot like a modern-day adventure story with a ton of suspense thrown in. It seems that every time Piper and Landon turn around something else is happening to them, although it's not unbelievable. I particularly liked the snowstorm scenes and thought that part of the book really showed off the true personalities of the main characters. I also loved that Piper's devotion to the Lord came across as genuine and was such an integral part of the story.
Dani is an incredible author and I'm seriously looking forward to reading the next book in this series ... and anything else she writes as well! Fans of romantic suspense are sure to love this series!!
Note: Although, this review is littered with references to Shattered, you don't necessarily have to read the series in order, but I think it would a lot more fun! [4.5 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House and LitFuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.
