Thrilling Medical Suspense from Richard Mabry!

Stress Test
by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.
Christian Fiction / Contemporary / Suspense
Available April 2013
Thomas Nelson
320 pages

About the Book
The may not have enough evidence to convict him, but they have enough to ruin his life.

Dr. Matt Newman thought he was leaving his life as a surgeon in private practice for a better one in academic medicine. But the kidnappers who attacked him as he left the hospital at 2 a.m. have no such plans—they just want him dead. Bound and in the trunk of his car, Matt’s only thought is fleeing with his life. He does escape, but at a price: a head injury that lands him in the ICU . . . where he awakens to discover he’s being charged with murder.

Sandra Murray is a fiery, redheaded lawyer who swore she was done with doctors after her last relationship. But when Matt calls, she knows she can’t walk away from defending someone who is truly innocent.

Matt’s career is going down the drain. His freedom and perhaps his life may be next. But with the police convinced he’s a killer and the kidnappers still trying to finish what they started, finding the truth—and the faith to keep going—will be the toughest stress test Matt has ever endured

My Thoughts
Stress Test is another stellar suspense novel by Dr. Richard Mabry! The beginning was so suspenseful and immediately drew me in. With every page, it seemed that clues were discovered and then another twist was thrown in to muddy the waters a bit more. It wasn't until the very end that things really came together for a neat conclusion.

Matt was an interesting character. I liked that this book focused on a male character—unlike many of the novels I read. Matt had a lot going wrong in his life and his attorney, a doctor friend, and brother are three characters who really step in to serve as friends and confidantes throughout the story. These additional characters make for a more well-rounded story. I loved how the faith elements wove through this story—and among all the characters—so naturally.

The one aspect that disappointed me a little was the end. There were a couple of things that didn't completely make sense to me. BUT the rest of the book was so good that this didn't really detract from all the positive aspects of the books. Once again, I really enjoyed this novel by Mabry and look forward to reading others by him in the future!  [4 stars]

I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Nelson & Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.

A Matter of Trust by Lis Wiehl

A Matter of Trust
by Lis Wiehl with April Henry
A Mia Quinn Mystery, Book 1
Christian Fiction / Suspense
Available March 2013
Thomas Nelson
320 pages

About the Book
When life is murder, who can you trust?

One minute Mia Quinn is in her basement, chatting on the phone with a colleague at the prosecutor’s office. The next minute there’s a gunshot over the line, and Mia listens in horror as her colleague and friend Colleen bleeds to death.

Mia’s a natural for heading up the murder investigation, but these days she has all she can do to hold her life together. As a new widow with a pile of debts, a troubled teenaged son, and a four-year-old who wakes up screaming at night, she needs more time with her family, not less—and working Colleen’s case will be especially demanding. But Colleen was her friend, and she needs to keep her job. So she reluctantly teams up with detective Charlie Carlson to investigate Colleen’s death. But the deeper they dig, the more complications unfold—even the unsettling possibility that someone may be coming after her.

Lis Wiehl’s signature plot twists and relatable characters shine in this absorbing series debut . . . with an intriguing cameo from her best-selling Triple Threat series.

My Thoughts
I typically finish books I start. However, after stopping and starting several times and reading nearly 100 pages, I decided to set this one aside. I enjoyed Lis Wiehl's previous fiction series (although later books shared a lot of similarities to James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series), so I was looking forward to this one.

Unfortunately, I didn't like Mia, the main character. AT. ALL. The premise of the book is that Mia is on the phone with a friend when her friend is shot. She hands the phone to her teenage son to listen to her dying breaths and leaves her two children (the youngest of which is preschool age) alone while she drives across town to "help" her friend. Seriously? Who does that?! It just seemed super selfish and pretty much set the stage for how Mia acts throughout the rest of the book (or at least as far as I read).

So, in this instance an unlikeable character was too much for me to get past. It's also worth mentioning that not much happened in the first third of the book. Pretty slow-moving plot. I don't plan to read the rest of this series.  [DNF]

Waiting on Wednesday | If the Shoe Fits

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is ...

If the Shoe Fits by Sandra D. Bricker

About the Book
Julianne used to believe in fairy tales; she's been watching for Prince Charming to come charging in on his white steed ever since the day her mother read her Cinderella for the first time. But she's never come close to finding the perfect man-instead she's always tripping over her childhood best friend, Will. And who finds their Prince Charming on a 10-speed bicycle on the other side of the cul de sac? Well... Julianne does. Only she doesn't have a clue.

She and Will are attorneys now, and they've joined up in private practice in a beautiful Cincinnati office building that overlooks the Ohio River. And then one day Julianne is on her way to court, and runs right smack dab into Prince Charming. But when she looks again, all she finds is a metaphoric sign she is certain came straight from Heaven: The Prince's toolbox has fallen off the back of his truck, and a work boot along with it. What better way for God to grab the attention of a Cinderella-in-training than to show her a glass slipper...errrr, work boot?...waiting to be reunited with its owner?

So she sets out to track down the mysterious Prince Charming. He's the most gorgeous guy she's ever seen...and a caring animal rescuer, too. Surely he must be the soul mate God has prepared her for.

But, Julianne's prince is starting to look less and less charming all the time. No matter how she tries to romanticize him, he just keeps tumbling down off that dumb pedestal. And with the Bar Association dinner coming up that will honor her for her outstanding charity work over the year, Julianne wants so much for her friends and colleagues to see her with someone besides her best friend Will. To make matters worse, Prince Charming has no designs on wearing a penguin suit and attending a stuffy old dinner. With her pride pressing in on her like sticks from a cactus, Julianne sinks to the bottom of the proverbial barrel and actually offers to pay Paul to be her date.

Julianne is on a collision course with God's perfect plan for her life...if only she could open her eyes and see it before it's too late.

Why I Can't Wait to Read It
Well, Sandie is HILARIOUS! Her Emma Rae Creations series kept me in stitches. Plus, I loved fairy tales as a child. All of these modernized re-tellings have piqued my interest, so why not start with this one?!

Happy Spring!

It seems that spring has finally (maybe hopefully is a more accurate word) sprung. Our weather over the past month has been all over the place. We've had lots of storms and rain (one of which knocked our fence down!), our grass turned green overnight, and our flowers are starting to pop out. To be honest, I'm never quite sure what I'm supposed to wear to work each day ... or if I can get away with sandals. Layers seem to be key right now. :) And my feet will just have to be cold until it warms up. Once I convert over to flip flops and sandals, there's no going back until about November. Ha!

Things have been a wee bit busy for the past few weeks—work, a little re-decorating around the house, spring cleaning, small group, more work, planning a mission trip for this summer, hanging out with family and friends, and even more work. But such is life! I'm not sure I'd really want it any other way, though ... and I don't see things changing any time soon.

I've been a little MIA on the blog off and on this year. Still trying to get into a rhythm for blogging and posting reviews and whatever else comes up. Maybe I should just embrace it and have a more "go with the flow" attitude ... a schedule doesn't seem like it's going to happen this year!

Anyway ... just wanted to say that I'm still here! Still reading tons, still planning to post reviews of lots more great books!

What have you been busy with so far this spring? Is it feeling like spring where you live ... or are you still stuck in winter?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

"It's Monday! What Are You Reading?" is a weekly meme hosted by Book Journey where we share what we're reading and our goals for the week.

What I Read Last Week ...
Apparently, I went on a little contemporary streak this past week. It's funny how you don't realize it until you see everything together. GREAT batch of books this week! So glad I finally read Wildflowers from Winter, and Poison was a great follow up to Redwood's debut novel. Jennifer came in the mail on Saturday, and I promptly sat down and read the whole thing. And I, of course, loved Sunsets, which I originally read several years ago. Reviews to come soon!

What I'm Reading Now ...
LOVING Julie Lessman's latest! I should finish it up today or tomorrow. Excellent!

What I Hope to Read This Week ...
My goal this week is to finish A Matter of Trust and Love at Any Cost and then start on (at least) one of these. So many great books to choose from!

That's what I'm hoping to read this week. What are you reading?
