Good Story but Not My Favorite from Siri Mitchell

Unrivaled
by Siri Mitchell
Christian Fiction / Historical
Available March 2013
Bethany House
400 pages

About the Book
Lucy Kendall returns from a tour of the Continent, her luggage filled with the latest fashions and a mind fired by inspiration. After tasting Europe's best confections, she's sure she'll come up with a recipe that will save her father's struggling candy business and reverse their fortunes. But she soon discovers that their biggest competitor, the cheat who swindled her father out of his prize recipe, has now hired a promotions manager--a cocky, handsome out-of-towner who gets under Lucy’s skin.

Charlie Clarke's new role at Standard Manufacturing is the chance of a lifetime. He can put some rough times behind him and reconnect with the father he's never known. The one thing he never counted on, however, was tenacious Lucy Kendall. She's making his work life miserable...and making herself impossible for him to forget.

My Thoughts
Siri Mitchell is the author who finally convinced me that I was a fan of historical fiction a few years ago. That combined with the beautiful cover (yes, I'm a cover judger!) and the interesting premise, and I was prepared to love this book. Unfortunately, regardless of how much I wanted to, I just didn't love this book.

The book started off okay, but I really got bogged down in the middle of it. While there were hints of romance during the book, it was extremely slow to develop and then wrapped up way too quickly at the end—as did some of the other elements of the book. At nearly 400 pages, there just weren't enough "new" things happening to hold my interest, and I felt that the pacing was off. I found myself skimming through large portions of the book in order to push myself through it.

The other thing that I disliked was that the entire story was told from a first-person perspective ... of two different characters. While the chapters were clearly labeled to let you know whose perspective you're reading, it still confused me at times. I had a hard time mentally switching back and forth.

There were certainly parts that I enjoyed. I definitely liked the aspect of a woman trying to make her own way and breaking out of the mold that society demands she fit into. And Charlie was a unique hero ... with a lot of growth from the beginning of the book.

It seems that I'm in the minority regarding my opionions of this book, so if you think Unrivaled sounds interesting, check out the other reviews before making a decision based solely on my opinion. Melanie at Christian Bookshelf Reviews wrote a great review if you're interested in a different perspective. While Unrivaled wasn't my favorite book, I still look forward to reading future books by Siri Mitchell, who is an extremely talented author.  [2.5 stars]

Teaching about Marriage through Fiction Makes for an Interesting Story

The Dance
by Dan Walsh & Gary Smalley
The Restoration Series, Book 1
Christian Fiction / Contemporary
Available April 2013
Revell Books
352 pages

About the Book
Love’s recovery starts with a single step . . .

After 27 years of marriage, Marilyn Anderson is tired of playing the role of perfect wife. Her husband Jim is a successful businessman who gives her everything she needs-a beautiful home in an upscale neighborhood, the financial freedom to be a stay-at-home mom, an enviable collection of stuff. Everything, that is, except what really matters: love.

After years of trying to connect with Jim, Marilyn has had enough. She longs to experience some measure of happiness before she’s too old to enjoy it. Needing some time to herself to sort things out, Marilyn leaves to start a new job and take dancing lessons-something she has wanted to do for as long as she can remember.

Shocked to find his wife gone, Jim Anderson must sort through the past to save his marriage. With a little help from an unexpected ally, he begins a campaign to win Marilyn back. What he doesn’t anticipate is how his actions will affect everyone around him-starting with himself.

My Thoughts
I was intrigued by the idea of Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley teaming up to write a new fiction series. I've loved the other books I've read by Dan Walsh, and Gary Smalley's series with Karen Kingsbury is one of my favorites of all time. So The Dance (and the whole series) definitely had potential for me.

I thought the story itself was really good. It was definitely hard to read about a couple whose marriage is falling apart and how it affected not only them but also their three kids. The book was so emotional ... just reading the emotions and thoughts of all parties involved and knowing that people that I know face similar situations was hard.

Audrey was my favorite character by far! I loved how her friendship with both Jim and Marilyn had such an impact on their marriage. Her story on its own was inspiring and I enjoyed the "secondary" story.

There were a few aspects of the book that bothered me. While I know the purpose of the book was to use fiction to teach about relationships, at times the book was super "preachy." Those sections took me out of the story and felt like I was reading more of a sermon or something. Also, the ending wrapped up really fast. So much of the story was spent talking about the problems of Jim and Marilyn's marriage and their individual efforts to resolve things and then the book ended without really giving much insight to how they planned to work on their problems together ... as a couple. The ending was sweet, don't get me wrong, but it was a little too "tidy" for me given how the book started.

Overall, though, The Dance was sweet, and I enjoyed this quick read. I'm not sure if I'll be reading the rest of this series or not. However, I'm still a huge fan of both of the authors! [3 stars]

Love This Romantic Suspense!

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Scorned Justice
by
Margaret Daley

Scorned Justice
by Margaret Daley
Men of the Texas Rangers series, Book 3
Christian Fiction / Contemporary / Suspense / Romance
Available April 2013
Abingdon Press
368 pages

About the Book
Texas Ranger Brody Calhoun is with his parents in west Texas when an unexpected attack injures the brother of Rebecca Morgan, Brody's high school sweetheart. The local sheriff, a good friend, asks for Brody's help. At first, it seems like an open-and-shut case. However, as Brody digs deeper, he realizes the attack may be related to an organized crime trial Rebecca will be overseeing. With Rebecca's help, he compiles evidence which involves cattle rustlers, bribery, and dirty payoffs that shatter the entire community and put Rebecca directly in the line of fire.

My Thoughts
Of the available books in this series, Scorned Justice is my favorite ... by far! Margaret delivers an incredible story that is filled with a number of crimes, interesting characters, and amazing romance! The beginning of the book was intense ... Rebecca's brother is missing and when they find him he is nearly dead. The book never really slowed down from there. With all of the various crimes going on, at times I wasn't sure things were going to come together. By the end of the book, though, I was impressed with how Margaret brought things together, revealed clues along the way, provided plenty of twists, and finally solved the crimes for us readers! I confess that while I suspected several times that I had figured everything out, but I was SHOCKED by the ending.

Besides the suspense (which was awesome!), the romance was just perfect. I mean, perfect. I just loved Brody and Rebecca and desperately wanted them to get past their junk and fall in love already! There were several other characters that really helped flesh out the novel into a more well-rounded story, and I thoroughly enjoyed the roles that Sean and Hattie played.

Overall this was an incredible story! I highly recommend Scorned Justice to anyone who loves a solid romantic suspense novel!  [5 stars]

Gripping Suspense in this Police Procedural from Janice Cantore

Avenged
by Janice Cantore
Pacific Coast Justice series, Book 3
Genre Info
Available April 2013
Tyndale House
400 pages

About the Book
When Officer Carly Edwards finds three young gangbangers shot execution style, she and her husband, Sergeant Nick Anderson, head of the gang unit, fear Las Playas may be on the verge of a gang war. The Las Playas PD is put on high alert as tensions escalate between rival gangs, especially after Carly confiscates weapons from a gang leader and learns they were stolen from a military base along with explosive devices.

But something isn’t adding up, and Carly suspects there might be more going on. As she prepares to testify at a major trial, Carly’s reputation is shredded by a reporter apparently trying to discredit her professionally. Facing pressure on all fronts, Carly must rely on faith and trust God in a deeper way during one of the biggest struggles of her career.

My Thoughts
After reading the final book in the Pacific Coast Justice series, Janice Cantore may just have jumped on to my "favorite authors" list. I've been reading a TON of romantic suspense novels recently, and Avenged is one of the best I've read in a while!

I really loved Carly and Nick and their relationship in this book! Just as they would think they had things all figured out, another challenge would pop up. It was refreshing to read about characters who were struggling personally (at times) but were really trying to respond differently than in the past and love each other well. That seems to be a hard balance to strike—in real life AND in fiction—but Janice pulls it off.

The suspense in this novel is gripping. The book is definitely stronger for all of Cantore's real-life experience as a police officer. The details of dealing with crime scenes, investigations, and other cops had me wondering if a career change might be in order. [Grin!] And I was glad to finally have answers to some of the loose ends from earlier in the series.

As much as I loved the plot and the characters, my favorite aspect of the book was how the author wove Christ throughout the book. Without being preachy, she tells a very gospel-centered story and I was encouraged throughout to look to Christ when things get tough.

I'm sad to see this series come to an end but look forward to reading Janice's next series. Who knows, maybe some of our old friends will show back up in future books?! If you enjoy suspenseful stories with a dose of romance, you're sure to enjoy the Pacific Coast Justice series! [5 stars]

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale House in exchange for my fair and honest review.
