My Thoughts

If there's one name in Southern fiction that you need to know, it's Tamera Alexander. And I can say with certainty that she has wowed this reader again with her latest, To Win Her Favor. 

In To Win Her Favor, Tamera brings to life a beautiful story filled with hope and redemption amidst some of the darkest times in the South—those hard years of rebuilding and reconciling a new way of life following the Civil War. She's certainly not afraid to tackle a tough subject and brings the injustice of racism and discrimination to the forefront in this novel. And all the emotions! It's certainly painful to read at times, but it's definitely worth it in the end!

I love that this book features a marriage of convenience—one of my favorite type of relationship, probably because it's so different than what typically occurs today. Cullen is such a wonderful character, and the way he constantly placed Maggie's well-being ahead of his own preferences and desires was a wonderful example of sacrificial love.

I will mention that this book is a bit more "romantic" than some others from this author. I felt that it was handled in a very tasteful way that shows the beauty of a blossoming romance between a married couple (in an arranged marriage). Personally, I didn't think there was too much detail, but I wanted to mention it so you would be aware.

To Win Her Favor was a beautiful story, and one I'm happy to recommend.  [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

I'm a big fan of Amy Matayo, so I was super excited to find out that she was invited to be part of this year's A Year of Weddings series! The story itself is interesting and unique. I mean, the thought of someone making a huge career for himself by stealing another person's—and a friend's no less!—lyrics had me intrigued. Throw in reconnecting with said friend and a bridezilla and I'm totally interested. All of the drama around the wedding totally stressed me out, but it made for a good story.

I think the biggest challenge for me is the length of the story. Amy writes what many consider to be "edgier" stories, so they're full of snark and sarcasm and characters that aren't quite as easy to love as what you might normally find in a romance story. While this plays out nicely in a full-length story where readers have a chance to get to know the characters over a longer period of time and more fully understand their history (and therefore their snark), for me it didn't come off quite as well in such a short novella. I really felt like this was the beginning of a story that I wanted to read a lot more of. (Amy, if you happen to be reading this and ever decide to go back and revisit April and Jack, I'll definitely read that story!)

I'm thoroughly happy to have read In Tune With Love, but I want more! If you've read anything by Amy before, you'll definitely enjoy this story. And if you haven't, well, give it a shot. I'm sure glad I did! [3.5 stars]

My Thoughts

Ruth Logan Herne knows how to tell a story! All Dressed Up in Love introduces readers to Greg, a lawyer and the new owner of his mother's bridal shop, and Tara, a law student looking for a part-time job until she finishes school. Thankfully, they just happen to be what the other one needs during a difficult time.

The story centers primarily around the happenings of the bridal shop. We get to read about brides coming in to find their perfect wedding dress, other characters who work at the shop, and plans to revitalize and save the shop. Of course, there are sparks between the two main characters, and a bit of romance and mixed feelings help propel that aspect of the story along. While the story did conclude a little abruptly, I was satisfied with the ending and enjoyed every minute spent with Greg and Tara in All Dressed Up in Love. This is definitely one of my favorites of this year's A Year of Weddings series so far! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

As I've come to expect from this series, Serving Up a Sweetheart is a quick read. The story is cute, and I enjoyed reading about characters who reconnected after many years—and a painful past. It was also cute to see them bond over Meadow's catering business.

This story wasn't a total homerun for me, though. I had a few hangups with how the plot played out, and it got a bit "preachy" at times. And while I understood where Meadow was coming from on her past hurts, she drove me crazy with her wishy-washy attitude.

Overall, though, the story was sweet and I enjoyed this quick read. If you enjoy contemporary romance, you should check this one out.  [3 stars]

My Thoughts

I cannot tell you how much I wanted to like this book. The plot is totally unique, which is a little rare these days to find something that no other author (that you're aware of!) has attempted or sort of done or whatever. A story about a teen with multiple personalities? Never read anything even close to that before. When I started reading the book, though, it was hard for me to connect with the storyteller (Clara) or the other main character (Elias Phinn). And when we started getting into his problems and his alternate world, I just got confused and couldn't really sort through everything. Unfortunately, after picking up and putting down this book over the past couple of months, I just can't get into it (30% done). [DNF]

I will say that I'm in the minority on this book. If the plot intrigues you, check out this review from Sara Ella, who raves about "stellar writing, an engaging story, and a well done ending." Her review caused me to pick the book up at least twice more in my quest to finish it. :)

My Thoughts

Honest to goodness, I think every book I read from Rachel Hauck is better than the last! After reading the first two books in The Royal Wedding series, I was thrilled to learn that another book was on the way! There's just something about royal families, princes, queens, and weddings that just makes me giddy. Thankfully, How to Catch a Prince lived up to every expectation I had for it.

I could go on and on about how much I love this book, but we would be here all day. Instead, let me give you five quick things that make this an incredible book and one that easily goes into the "must read" category.

• While the characters are royal (or heirs, at least!), they are not perfect. Nope. Stephen and Corina have some serious baggage. This only makes them more relatable and real.
• The parties and fancy dresses! Seriously, I felt like I was a fly on the wall in a few scenes. Hauck does a great job of bringing these scenes to life and making readers feel like they're part of the story.
• We get to catch up with characters we've met in previous books. It's hard to turn the last page on a story of two people you really enjoyed getting to know, so I always like seeing that they're "okay" some time later.
• There's a bit of magic in this story that truly turned it into a fairy tale. Sure, I had to suspend belief a few times, but I adored these special moments and characters and felt like they added a unique flavor to the story.
• There is some serious romance in this book . . . a couple of truly delicious kisses. It's not overdone, but there is definitely chemistry here!
• And as a bonus, how lovely is that cover?!

How to Catch a Prince is a thoroughly enjoyable novel that had me alternating between delighted squeals and satisfied sighs. Anyone who enjoys fairy tales will surely love this romance! [5 stars]

My Thoughts

I think it's safe to say that The Dandelion Field is unlike any other book I've read recently, maybe ever. There are essentially two main stories running concurrently. One focuses on Raine and Cody and their unintended teenage pregnancy. The other focuses on Gin and Dan as adults who care about these teenagers in trouble, struggling with their own baggage, and possibly falling in love. There's a lot packed into these 350 pages, but Kathryn Springer pulls it off easily.

The characters are fascinating. With four main characters and a decent-sized supporting cast, it would be easy to assume that they would be fairly simple or one-dimensional. Fortunately for us, the author does a phenomenal job of creating a full cast of characters that are real. They each have traits that made me love them, as well as flaws that made them human and baggage that made the story more interesting.

From the very first page until well after I finished the book, I could not stop thinking about this story. It's beautiful, and I loved that the author faced some really difficult topics head on. Additionally, faith is central to the story and is a perfect complement to every aspect of the book.

The Dandelion Field is a compelling story that tackles tough issues with humor, romance, and faith. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. In my opinion, it's a must read! [5 stars]

My Thoughts

I'm a huge fan of Rachel Hauck, and she pulled off a great novella with A Brush with Love. It's hard to truly develop a full story with interesting characters in so few pages, but Hauck manages to do just that. I truly enjoyed every aspect of this story and was sad to see it end.

How many romance stories have you read where the girl isn't the most beautiful girl in the world? Not many. Well, in this story, Ginger is beautiful, but because of a past tragedy which has left her covered with scars, she believes she is ugly. I loved this aspect of the book. The way Tom befriended her and helped her learn to see herself the same way he does. Beautiful.

If you're looking for a romantic story with a little more depth and a sweet end, A Brush with Love is just the story for you. [5 stars]

My Thoughts

Wow! What a great conclusion to the end of this first Year of Weddings! I'm a huge fan of stories where long-time friends finally realize their feelings for each other, and Beth pulls this one off just perfectly. (I also think that this is a great way to give readers a fuller story despite the shortness of a novella.)

I just loved Sadie and Erik and had butterflies the entire time I was reading! Their friendship was so unique and special, and I really loved watching their romantic relationship evolve. Their friends were a great asset to the story as well, and played more than a minimal role to the development of the plot.

A November Bride is a fun, romantic read that I wholeheartedly recommend! [5 stars]

My Thoughts

I'm a fan of anything southern (being from the South and all!) and Magnolia Market is a great southern read. While it doesn't highlight the best the south has to offer (initially, at least), it does give readers a glimpse into what "old southern money" is all about.

I liked Avery right away and found myself constantly frustrated by the things that kept happening to her. It was all just so unfair! But, alas, life is not fair ... and neither is Avery's. However, for every bad thing that is done TO her, a new friend comes along and helps her—even if it's in a totally unexpected way. I thought it was a great lesson in accepting help graciously and knowing we weren't intended to go through life on our own.

The other characters in town were a great addition to the book and helped round out the story. From eccentric and grumpy to rich and snooty to kind and generous and everything in between, we get a little bit of everything.

The middle of the book seemed to lag a bit for me, but otherwise, I truly enjoyed this book! I'm excited to read more of the Trumpet & Vine series! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I am so thrilled that Zondervan has chosen to continue the "Year of Weddings" series through 2015! I thoroughly enjoyed reading a new novella each month, and, while I didn't fall in love with every one, I definitely enjoyed the majority of them! Unfortunately, the second year of novellas is off to a rocky start, in my opinion. 

Plot: It seemed that the plot alternated between being extremely rushed and dragging. I never felt that the author found a steady pace for the events taking place. Additionally, the story was fairly boring. With the exception of one moment (to be addressed later), nothing really surprised me, and I was never left wondering what might happen next. Verna's request for help planning a wedding for an unknown bride and groom felt contrived and over-the-top. I realize that authors face great challenges when trying to develop an engaging plot in so few pages, but this still fell below my expectations for novellas.

Characters: Neither of the main characters were very likeable. Hope was whiny and immature. I wanted to like John, but he was portrayed as being pushy a few times, which left me wanting a true "hero" for this story. I thought perhaps they would both grow and mature, but it didn't really feel like they did.

Christian Content: Considering this is portrayed as a Christian book, I was disappointed by how Christianity was portrayed in this book. In particular, I was bothered by the fact that Hope kept referring to these little "mantras" to get her through situations (i.e., God helps those who help themselves.) While they may be catchy sayings, these sayings were simply not founded on biblical principles. I was waiting for another John or Verna (or even the pastor!) to drive home some solid biblical truths with Hope—perhaps showing her that true faith is founded on God's Word—but that never happened. John did offer a little more hope, as it seemed that his relationship with God had grown in the years prior to the book's opening scene. While I don't expect strong Christian themes in every "Christian" book I read, I do expect books published by a Christian publisher to portray Christian principles accurately.

Romantic Content: *****SPOILER*****I don't know how to discuss this last point without giving away some of the details of the story, so I'm not even going to try. Read ahead at your own risk. The most shocking and disappointing portion of this book had to do with how s3x was portrayed. Essentially, John and Hope elope when they are 18. However, Hope freaks out just after the ceremony conducted by an internet-ordained "minister" and they decide to simply not file the paperwork. Fast forward 10 years, and Hope learns they are—surprise!—married anyway. When John returns home after being away for 10 years, Hope tells him they are still married, says she doesn't know what to do (because she is dating another man), cries on his shoulder. The very next sentence (at the beginning of the next chapter) references Hope getting out of John's bed. WHAT?!?! I thought surely I had misunderstood, but, no, Hope and John apparently can't contain themselves after 10 years apart and have s3x. Despite not knowing they are married even 10 minutes before and despite Hope being in a relationship with another man, they still have s3x. After having s3x, Hope immediately goes to an attorney's office to find out how to annul the marriage. Hope later decides to try to make the marriage work, but says she won't say "I love you" or wear her wedding ring until she can know for sure this will work. Hello??? Did she not just have s3x with her "husband"? But now she doesn't know if it's going to work out? I'm sorry, but this put a really bad taste in my mouth. Yes, they were technically married, but there were so many other circumstances surrounding this revelation that I felt like this was totally uncalled for. It really felt out of place and not appropriate for a Christian book.*****END SPOILER*****

Overall, Love at Mistletoe Inn was a disappointing read for me. I'll definitely give other books in the series a shot, but I recommend skipping this one. [2 stars]

My Thoughts

Katie Ganshert has quickly risen to "favorite author" status, and An October Bride is another wonderful story by this talented author. She somehow manages to tell a very full and complete story in a limited number of pages and does it very well. Jake and Emma's story is sweet and emotional from the very start. As Emma is dealing with her father's declining health, Jake is the perfect friend and support she needs. Of course, things don't go smoothly the entire time, so there are a few dips and turns that are sure to keep you flipping pages (or swiping across your e-reader screen!). Given how much I loved the story, I was sad to see it end and would love to read more about these characters! I highly recommend this wonderful romance ... one of my favorites in the series!!  [5 stars]

My Thoughts

A September Bride is another enjoyable installment in the Year of Weddings series. Kathryn Springer is a new-to-me author, and I really enjoyed her writing style. She delivered a sweet romance in a lovely small town and even provided a plot that's a little different than the typical romance story (which can feel overdone at times). I loved all the tension between the two main characters at the beginning. It seemed that the town itself was possibly the best part of the story, and I would love to read more books set in Red Leaf! With all the good, my only complaint is that the novella was just a little too short and wrapped up really quickly. Overall, though, I'm a fan and I highly recommend! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

What a fun book! I mean, what's not to love about reality TV, cupcakes, and romance?! All's Fair in Love and Cupcakes is a light-hearted read with plenty of funny moments. At times, I was ready for the characters to just talk already! But that tension helped keep me interested in what would happen next. I enjoyed the interaction between the other contestants as well. It really helped give another dimension to the story. I was a smidge sad at how quickly the book wrapped up, but I'm looking forward to reading more about Lucas and Kat in Betsy's next book, which features Kat's sister. Readers who enjoy fun romantic stories should definitely check out this book! [4 stars]

My Thoughts

Initially, I found A Lady's Honor a little difficult to get into. For me, I felt like too many characters with too many twisty plot details were introduced in quick succession. However, once I started piecing together who everyone was (does anyone else get confused by the way people during this time period were often referred to by multiple names?!) and what was going on, I quickly got caught up in the story and was turning pages as fast as humanly possible.

It's not often that I've read a true suspense novel set during a historical period, but Eakes does a great job combining suspense, history, and romance to create an intriguing novel. I enjoyed reading this book from the perspective of Elizabeth, who is bold and courageous—definitely living outside the expectations for women during her time. I'm looking forward to see how this series will continue. [4 stars]

My Thoughts

This is the second book I've read by Debra Clopton, and this is the second one I've thoroughly enjoyed! An August Bride was equal parts funny, romantic, and tender. Kelsey is an endearing character, and Brent is certainly a heart-throb. Kelsey's aunt and her friends really contributed to the overall feeling of the book and nearly stole the show. After reading such a strong story (and a novella, no less!) from Clopton, I'm anxious to go back and read the rest of her "Mule Hollow" stories. I definitely recommend An August Bride to anyone looking for a sweet romantic comedy!  [4 stars]

My Thoughts

I hate writing "less than positive" reviews, but sadly A July Bride was my least favorite of the Year of Weddings series. Alyssa is left at the altar, but then Brendan (the jilting groom) realizes the terrible mistake he made and begins frantically trying to win her back. I felt sorry for Alyssa and the humiliation she suffered. But beyond that, I didn't experience much emotion while reading this novella.

I wished the author had given me a bit ... more ... related to the reasons behind the sudden breakup. It also felt odd for another guy to come on the scene and for Alyssa to be caught between the two guys. I had a hard time establishing the ages of the characters. Many of the actions and conversations gave the story more of a middle school or young high school feeling, but since the characters were discussing marriage, I assume they were at least college-aged.

Overall, I just wasn't impressed with this story. So many of the other books in this series have been fantastic, but I would probably skip over this one. [2 stars]

My Thoughts

I've really enjoyed this series so far, but honestly, this wasn't my favorite in the series. Let's start with the good points first, though. The premise of the book was super intriguing to this reality show fan. (Anyone else want to admit they still watch The Bachelor?!) So of course, I was interested in a book that gives the story of what happens once the cameras are "off." The thought of planning a wedding to be on TV nearly caused me to break out in hives, so I definitely felt empathy for Wynne.

Unfortunately, though, I felt like something was missing. This novella seemed much shorter than the others (perhaps only my perception?), and I felt like it was more of a short story than a true novella. I even wondered if this was a follow-up to another book from the author. I felt like there was a lot of "telling" which isn't my favorite style of story-telling. I also had a hard time connecting with the characters. I understood the conflict, but I didn't truly care about it because I didn't really care about the people involved. 

Personally, this seems like a great start of a novel but not really a complete novella. However, I am glad that I read it. It was a nice diversion on the way home from the beach. [3 stars]
