My Thoughts

If there's one name in Southern fiction that you need to know, it's Tamera Alexander. And I can say with certainty that she has wowed this reader again with her latest, To Win Her Favor. 

In To Win Her Favor, Tamera brings to life a beautiful story filled with hope and redemption amidst some of the darkest times in the South—those hard years of rebuilding and reconciling a new way of life following the Civil War. She's certainly not afraid to tackle a tough subject and brings the injustice of racism and discrimination to the forefront in this novel. And all the emotions! It's certainly painful to read at times, but it's definitely worth it in the end!

I love that this book features a marriage of convenience—one of my favorite type of relationship, probably because it's so different than what typically occurs today. Cullen is such a wonderful character, and the way he constantly placed Maggie's well-being ahead of his own preferences and desires was a wonderful example of sacrificial love.

I will mention that this book is a bit more "romantic" than some others from this author. I felt that it was handled in a very tasteful way that shows the beauty of a blossoming romance between a married couple (in an arranged marriage). Personally, I didn't think there was too much detail, but I wanted to mention it so you would be aware.

To Win Her Favor was a beautiful story, and one I'm happy to recommend.  [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

I absolutely adored The Best Laid Plans! I was immediately drawn into the story and couldn't get enough! After reading The Better Man, I enjoyed picking up with Emma and seeing her fall in love. I will admit that she drove me a little crazy at times because she was so focused on "her plan." But through her nuttiness, she was really sweet and kind and had a lot of fear over her future . . . something I think most people can relate to. Charlie was a wonderful character as well. He was so genuine and really cared for the people around him. Add in a bit of romance and a few tense moments, and it was a wonderful story!

As I read the last pages, I closed the book . . . a bit sad that my journey with Emma and Charlie was over, but deeply satisfied. I can't wait to read the next book in the Chicago Sisters series! [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed The Match Maker, which is the second in a trilogy. The book picked up right where we left off in the last one, and I was excited to see what would happen to Charlotte next. 

Perhaps because I'm in the throes of planning a vacation, I loved getting to "go" to Scotland through this novel. The author really brought the scenery to life, and Scotland is now firmly on my travel wish list.

This was another story where I was a bit torn about how I wanted things to go for Charlotte and some of the other characters, but I thought the author handled this tension well. She did a great job of building up two options but let me down easy when it was time to make a choice. 

***** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ******) And again, Charlotte is left in a difficult spot with no real closure to her story. As a result, I'm terribly anxious to read the final book in this series and make sure Charlotte gets some sort of happy ending. ***** END SPOILER ALERT *****

I thought this was a great novel. It's fairly light but still has a few gut-wrenching moments. I'm a huge fan of this author, and I highly recommend this series! [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

I've now read two books by Karey White, and she is one talented author! The idea of reading a story about a woman who is a "husband maker" intrigued me immediately. I had a friend like that in college (where every person they dated married their next boyfriend), so I know the pain that comes from that, the wondering "what's wrong with me". And it's definitely a different story than what you normally read!

And what a great story it was! I felt HORRIBLE for Charlotte from the very beginning. She has amazing family and friends around her who care about her a great deal. But other people are terrible to her, mostly behind her back. It was just so unfair and sad. I could feel her pain.

As the romance in the book picked up, I LOVED Charlotte's relationship with Kyle! There were so many funny things that happened to them. And Kyle was such a great guy!

I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that I'm very glad this is the first book in a series (that needs to be read in order!). I'm looking forward to reading more of Charlotte's story ... and hopefully sooner than later! [4.5 stars]

Sneak Peek

Mrs. Shelton’s words bounced around in my head. They call her the husband maker.

“That’s quite a frown you’ve got going there.”

“Sorry.”

Angus dipped his head, forcing me to make eye contact with him.

“Don’t be sorry. Just talk to me.”

“Have you heard anyone call me the husband maker?”

Angus leaned back in the booth and shook his head. His dark, worried eyes watched me. “Who told you about that?”

“So you have?” When he didn’t immediately speak, I knew the answer. I sighed and leaned back against my seat as well.

There we sat, both of us slouching against our seats, looking at each other.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whispered.

“Now why would I do that? Why would I purposely tell you something that would hurt your feelings?”

I should have appreciated his desire to spare me, but at the moment, I wasn’t sure what to think. “Wouldn’t a real friend be honest with me?”

“I was honest. If you’d ever asked me, I’d have told you. I wouldn’t have lied to you. But I don’t think a real friend would jump at the chance to share something hurtful. Wouldn’t a real friend be protective?”

I shrugged.

“Who told you?”

“No one.”

“Then how—?”

“I overheard Hannah Shelton’s mom in the restroom. She was telling some other woman that everyone calls me the husband maker.”

“Not everyone, Chuck.”

“You know what I mean. And why shouldn’t they? There I was at Harrison’s wedding. I guess I just made him a husband. I guess I made Skyler a husband. And CJ and Jerry and . . . I can keep going if you want me to.” I would have kept going to illustrate my point, but my voice was starting to quiver, and in a minute, I’d only have two options—cry or yell at Angus. As upset as I was that he’d never told me, I knew he didn’t deserve to be yelled at. He was here for therapy, after all.

“Charlotte.”

His voice was full of concern, and he used my given name, so I knew he wasn’t kidding around.

“What?” My voice cracked.

He shook his head. “Don’t worry about what people say. You’ve had bad luck. That’s all. It isn’t your fault.”

The waitress brought out our food. “Can I get you anything else?”

“This is great, thanks.” Angus wasted no time piling food on his plate. “I hope you’re hungry,” he said after she left.

“I can’t believe we’re eating this much food at almost ten.”

“If the food doesn’t take your mind off all this junk, the heartburn will.”

I laughed.

Angus’s voice turned serious again. “If you wish I’d have told you, I’m sorry I didn’t.”

I nodded. I wasn’t sure I wanted the answer, but I had to ask. “Have you ever called me that?”

“Of course not.”

My Thoughts

Wow! What a surprising (in a good way!) book! Based on the synopsis, I knew I would enjoy reading All My Belongings, but I had no idea how much I would love it! 

Isaac and Becca are both fantastic lead characters. They may be two of my favorite book friends this year! I liked them both right away but still found myself wanting to get to know them better. While the romance thread is very light throughout most of the book, there was enough of a spark early on that had me hoping for a happy ending for these two.

I was shocked by the depth of topics the author addresses in this books—this is no light, fluffy romance novel! Ruchti brings some pretty serious subjects into the book (i.e., "mercy killings" and adoption) and manages to do so in a natural way.

The author does a wonderful job of bringing everything full circle. I was surprised by a few things, but happy at the way it all played out. I also loved that where many books conclude, this author gave us about 60 more pages to truly bring things to a more natural—and finished—ending.

My only criticisms are very minor. There were a few times when I was confused by how close Becca and Geneva were. Initially, Becca calls her "Geneva" but later she calls her "Mrs. Larkin." Not a huge deal, but I was confused. I also felt like there were a couple of points where the plot moved a little too fast. Again not a huge deal, but I would have liked to see these moments stretch out a little more.

All in all, I truly loved All My Belongings. Cynthia Ruchti has written a moving and deep story that I am so glad I read! I can't wait to go back and read her previous novel, When the Morning Glory Blooms! [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

Until I Found You was my first introduction to Victoria Bylin. I think it's safe to say that it won't be my last venture through one of her books!

On the surface, the story is about two people with lots of issues who are navigating their way through a new friendship. However, there's so much more to it than that! The author uses this front to convey messages about God's love and our need to place our ultimate trust in Him. I loved how she used the story of the condors to relay messages of faithfulness and to show God's majesty as well. And Leona's story of her marriage and her own relationship with God told through journal entries was a powerful addition.

With so many things going on simultaneously, I expected at times to feel overwhelmed. However, somehow it all worked together perfectly to tell an amazing story! Nick and Kate are awesome characters—real people with real issues. They're not perfect—by any stretch!—but they both want to be better people, even if they don't always know how to go about it. Leona is an endearing character. She really balances some of the tension that comes from the other characters with her steadiness.

Until I Found You is unlike any other book I've read recently! Bylin has written a compelling story that left me in awe!  [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

Rise and Shine is such a fun book! It seems that fairy tale retellings are quite popular right now, and Sandie Bricker has done a great job of creating a modern version of Sleeping Beauty.

To be honest, the premise was almost too sad for me to deal with. A woman has an accident on her honeymoon, goes into a coma for 10 years, finally awakens only to learn that her husband died of cancer several years earlier. So sad, right? But I trusted that Sandie would give me both a great story and a happily-ever-after ending (it's a fairy tale after all!), so I read the book despite my nervousness about the potentially-sad plot.

As I've come to expect from Sandie, Rise and Shine was great! The story is cute with plenty of laughs. Shannon's aunt is hilarious with her exclamation of "yippee!" every time Shannon remembers something. And Shannon and Daniel are fun, likeable characters. They definitely have some issues to work through, but it was fun to watch their relationship develop. Daniel was a great hero and I loved how he took care of Shannon. The best part of Shannon is that she is such a strong character—and only begins to realize it after she wakes up.

As great as the book was, I was a little disappointed in the ending. It felt really abrupt, and I just needed a little more. Maybe one more chapter or an epilogue? Overall, though, I definitely enjoyed this book and recommend it to fans of romantic comedies and/or fairy tales. [4.5 stars]

For more than a decade, Sandra D. Bricker lived in Los Angeles. While honing her chosen craft of screenwriting in every spare moment, she worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime television's hottest stars. My Thoughts

A Promise in Pieces is one of the most unusual books (in a good way!) I've read in a long time. Clara is the focus of this story. While her family takes a trip to New Orleans, her grandchildren ask her to tell the story of her life. She takes us back to her time serving as a nurse during WWII and reflects on how that experience affects the rest of her life.

It's an amazing story. Poignant, adventurous, emotional, sweet. I loved that the author gave us a beautiful love story—without making it a romance. It focuses on the love that Clara has with all of the people in her life. It was just beautiful!

The author does everything an author is "not supposed to do." There's a bit of head-hopping. The time changes between the past and present (sometimes unclearly) throughout the book. There's more telling than showing. The main character's story is primarily told through a first-person narrative that feels a lot like stream of consciousness, with plenty of long sentences. But somehow, it totally worked! The author's style left me feeling like the characters were chatting with me over breakfast. It pulled me into the story in a way that few books do, and I was loathe to put it down. In fact, I read the story in two sittings!

This is a phenomenal book, and I'm happy to recommend it!  [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

This post was supposed to go up on April 19 as part of a blog tour. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the post did not go live as I had originally planned. My apologies to the author and the tour coordinator for the delay!

Oh my! What a cute story! Righting a Wrong was a fast read that I flew through in just one day! I thoroughly enjoyed Cambri and found myself relating to her on a number of levels. She feels a responsibility to her dad—despite their differences—but really just wants to go back to her life.

Of course, Jace could have something to do with that! The sparks and the tension were palpable, and I loved the chemistry and awkwardness that characterized their interactions early in the book! The pacing was right on, and I felt like I got much more than a mere 144 pages!

I definitely recommend Righting a Wrong as a clean romance and am looking forward to reading more of this author in the (hopefully near!) future! [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

What a sweet story! Eden's interactions with everyone around her made me just love her! She cares so much about the residents at the Assisted Living home—and they care about her just as much. Some of the residents were hilarious! As Drew and Eden got closer, I really loved the two of them together. The "love triangle" aspect was a little different in that I liked the other guy too! Eden's relationship with her mom was really special too. It was such a tender story line, and I got misty a few times reading about them as her mom got worse.

Silver Linings is another clean romance novel that I am happy to recommend without any reservations! [4.5 stars]

Eden opened the door and hopped out. “I’ll be just a second, if you want to stay out here.”

Drew could tell a non-invitation when he heard one, so he nodded. He did get out of the car—where somehow it was less cold—and stomped his feet a few times while she walked up the stairs, a firm grip on the rail. She disappeared through the door.  A few minutes later, she came out, the worry lines back on her face. Instinctively, he moved closer, but before he could say anything, her heel slipped out from under her and she slid down several stairs. He rushed over to stop her fall, catching her just before she fell down the last three steps.

“Are you okay?” Drew’s heart pounded with adrenaline.

She moaned and used the railing and his hand to pull herself up to standing. “Guess I should have scraped and salted those this morning.”

“Your landlord doesn’t do it?”

She let out a short, humorless laugh. “No.” He noticed her limping when they started toward the car and he slid his arm around her waist.

“Do you need to go get that looked at? Did you break something?”

“No. I just twisted my knee. It’ll be okay. This happens like once a week.”

Drew stopped walking and stared at her in disbelief. Once a week?

“I’m fine. Really. But we’ve got to go before it gets too late. Thank you, though.” She glanced up at him and Drew’s breath caught in his throat. The sunlight kissed her pale hair, skin, and eyes, reminding Drew once again of an angel. She was so beautiful. So kind. And so taken.

He forced himself to step back and pretended nothing weird had just happened by running a hand through hair still slick with the gel he’d put in it after his shower. He discreetly wiped gel off onto his pants. “So, Silver Linings?”

“Yes. Silver Linings.” She wouldn’t meet his eyes, and he didn’t think it was his imagination that she sounded breathless too.

My Thoughts

Home Matters was a great introduction to this new-to-me author! As an avid fan of home improvement shows—since the days of Trading Spaces!—it was fun to read about the stars of a fictional show. I enjoyed the love triangle, but definitely had an opinion about who Olivia should choose. Nevertheless, the journey she went on to figure out who she wanted to be with was a fun one. The book had plenty of humor thrown in, which added to my enjoyment of the story. Overall, I thought this was a great book. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series and to reading more from Julie in the future! [4.5 stars]

Pete scratched the scruff on his chin. “Olivia Pembroke,” he repeated, as if giving her name some serious thought. “Sounds like a character from a Jane Austen movie.”

Olivia responded with a dour look. “You a fan of turn- of-the-century romance films?”

Pete shrugged off her comment. “I have three older sisters,” he said, his eyes studying her from head to foot. “Except, the more I’m getting to know you, with that fiery disposition and those Bambi eyes, you’re reminding me more of a feisty little Disney fairy than a demure lady of class.” He lifted his thick eyebrows, curious. “Is that your real name, or some sort of made-up stage name?”

Just because a girl had a heart-shaped face, turned-up nose, and bow mouth, didn’t make it okay for people to tease her about resembling any sort of cute little pixy. She hated when people made the connection. He was really starting to annoy her, which was obviously what he intended, so she refused to allow him the satisfaction of knowing just how much.

“Not that it’s any of your business, but both.” She idly examined her manicure. “My momma named me Olivia because she thought Olivia Pembroke would look good all lit up on a marquee. She knew I was going to be a big star when I grew up.”

He huffed out a laugh. “You, and about a few thousand other pretty faces in this town.”

Olivia shot him a withering look. “What’s your point?”

Pete shrugged. “Why waste your life chasing what will likely amount to no more than two minutes of fame when there are nobler causes out there worth pursuing?” He almost sounded genuine. “After all, love and fame can’t live in the same place.”

Olivia’s hands curled into tight, angry balls. Who did this man think he was to lecture her on the nobility of her ambitions? The most infuriating man she’d ever met, that’s who. “Says the man who was obviously born to clean toilets.” Taking a step closer, she faced him straight on and planted her fists on her hips. “And just a tip, Socrates. The next time you go all philosophical on a girl, and you expect her to take you seriously, try not using movie quotes to prove your point.” She slid him a superior glance. “Like I wouldn’t recognize a line from Country Strong.”

Pete moved closer as well. Their noses were barely inches from touching. She could actually feel his breath on her face, and for some unconscionable reason, she found the sensation oddly tantalizing. Then he opened his mouth to say something else. But before he could get a word out, a voice from the near distance interrupted.

“And, that’s a wrap!”

Olivia jerked toward the casting director. “What?” she questioned, though she knew fully well what “that’s-a-wrap” meant. “I’m sorry, but unless I’m mistaken, we haven’t begun shooting yet.”

The director rolled his hand through the air. “Yes well, we’ve seen all we need to,” he said, his attention already diverted to the phone his assistant was handing him. “Thank you for coming down today, Olivia. We’ll be in touch.”

My Thoughts

Love by the Book by Colleen Coble
This novella starts the book off well. The town rallies around Molly in her time of need, and I'm interested to see how that story continues to play out later. Heather is a sweetheart of a character, and I loved how giving she was. When Paul comes on the scene, I could see where this story was going, but I enjoyed the journey, quick as it was. Great start to the collection! [4 stars]

Shelved Under Romance by Kristen Billerbeck
Oh, Kristin Billerbeck! I love how her characters are so stereotypical. It definitely adds a bit of humor to the story. :) Abby is the quintessential nerdy, boring librarian who seriously needs a social life. Her friends are so sweet to encourage her to try new things, and Wyatt definitely breaks her out of her comfort zone! The ending is pretty rushed, but I enjoyed Wyatt and Abby's friendship as they learn to look past the obvious to see the true character of the person inside. [3.5 stars]

A New Chapter by Diann Hunt
This novella has so many elements that I love in a story—childhood friends reuniting, kids playing a main role in the story, forgiveness as a major theme! Sigh. As Lia and Joey reconnect, I enjoyed getting to know them and see how their relationship grew out of their friendship as kids. While this was a short story at around 80 pages, it didn't feel short, and I think it has a lot to do with the fact they already knew one another. I also adored Lia's mom and Joey's daughter! Sweet story all the way around. It's hard to choose, but I think this one might be my favorite story in the collection. :) [5 stars]

Happily Ever After by Denise Hunter
After reading a bit about Molly in the previous novellas, I was pleased to finally read her story. I had such empathy for her as she faced one struggle after another. And I loved Gage—a true hero! The final story in this collection is the longest and has the feel of a complete book, though I would have been happy to read about Molly and Gage for much longer than the 120 pages that Denise gave me! [5 stars]

Overall
I've thoroughly enjoyed the previous books in the Smitten series, and Smitten Book Club was no exception! All four authors did a great job including the main characters from the other novellas, and it was fun to continue reading about their stories throughout the other stories. The idea of a book possibly giving clues to a hidden treasure was fun, and I loved the hint of mystery woven throughout the book. With four talented authors contributing to this book, I don't see how anyone could be disappointed! Highly recommended! [4.5 stars]

My Thoughts

Scott and Rachel each turn to virtual friends when life starts getting complicated. As they each share more and more of themselves with their new friends, they grow more distant from each other. When things take a really strange—and scary!—twist, they realize that they still desperately need each other. But will they be able to overcome the hurts of the past months in time to figure out what in the world is going on?

John Faubion's debut novel, Friend Me, is an intense and thrilling read. The plot seemed far-fetched, futuristic at first. But as I kept reading, I realized that people are turning to online relationships every day, so the abuses explored in this book are totally possible—and even probable. (Although the whole "virtual" bit doesn't exist quite like this right now.) I was drawn in and could not stop reading. I seriously read this book in a day-and-a-half!

My only complaint was that the book wrapped up too quickly. I wanted just a little more explanation of the ending (total shocker!) ... and maybe a few more pages in the epilogue.

Also, due to the topics addressed and some of the ways that Scott and his virtual friend are involved, I would recommend this book for mature readers. The author does a great job of exploring the idea of an intimate, online relationship (outside of marriage) without going too far, but it's definitely what I would consider "edgy."

Friend Me is a wonderful book, and I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy today! But ... fair warning ... I wouldn't read this one at bedtime. :) [4.5 stars]
