About the Book
Looking for a woman of good character and pleasant disposition willing to learn the ranching business in Arizona territory. Must be SINGLE and prepared to remain so now and forever more. Will be given ownership of ranch. —Eleanor Walker

Disgraced dime novelist Kate Tenney fled the city that banned her latest book for a fresh start at a cattle ranch in the Arizona Territory. She hopes ranching turns out to be as romantic as she portrayed it in her novels.

But what awaits her is a much harder life. There is no room for mistakes on a working cattle ranch in 1895, and Kate is ill-prepared for her new life. She quickly learns that dawn comes early . . . every day. But she is tenacious.

Having been abandoned by a string of men, Kate has no intention of ever marrying. But she didn’t expect to meet Luke Adams either. Luke awakens feelings inside Kate she doesn’t recognize, and his steady presence is a constant distraction. She has only written about love in the past, never known it herself. But her feelings for Luke stand in the way of all she has to gain if she is chosen as the heir.

Perhaps God brought Kate to the barrenness of the desert to give new life to her jaded heart.

My Thoughts
Running from her past and her failed career, Kate answers an add to become heiress to a successful ranching operation in Arizona. The catch? She must promise never to marry. When she arrives at the Last Chance Ranch, she realizes that everything she thought she knew about ranching is actually much harder. If she's going to earn a place as the heir, she's going to have to learn a lot—and quickly. When she meets Luke, her plans of ranching come into question. Will she choose a ranch or love? And more importantly, will she learn to rely on God?

Dawn Comes Early is a sweet, romantic story. I loved the idea behind the series—a commitment to remain single for life. Not your typical fare in romance novels! Kate and Luke were interesting characters and I liked them both right off the bat. I knew there were underlying issues in both of their pasts and often wondered how they would relate to the rest of the story. Slowly but surely, the secrets began to come out, which really enriched the story.

The hands at the ranch are great secondary characters. They provided a bit more depth and interesting interactions with Kate. There were a couple that I would like to learn more about in future books in the series. Additionally, Kate's ranching adventures are hilarious, and I caught myself laughing out loud a few times.

Overall, Dawn Comes Early is an enjoyable, heart-warming story. If you're looking for a romantic story with a few laughs thrown in, add this one to your TBR list. [3.5 stars]

Pray for the Horn | Djibouti

I didn't have a "plan" for today, but I think this might be better (and certainly more important!) than anything I could have planned anyway.

I mentioned before that I'm praying for the 100 million people living in the Horn of Africa. Well, over the next few weeks, Secret Church is blogging about specific ways to pray for the Horn.

My heart has been broken as I've learned more about these people. Can you imagine living in a place where it is very possible to live your whole life without knowing another Christian? Or even worse to live and die without ever hearing the name of Jesus?

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
Romans 10:14-15

Hop on over to the Secret Church blog, learn a bit about Djibouti, and join me in praying for those who live in Djibouti this week.

Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes

Heart's Safe Passage
by Laurie Alice Eakes
The Midwives, Book 2
Historical Christian Fiction / Romance
Published February 2012
Revell Books
377 pages

About the Book
It's 1813 and all Phoebe Lee wants out of life is to practice midwifery in Loudon County, Virginia. When Belinda, her pregnant sister-in-law, presses Phoebe to accompany her onto a British privateer in order to cross the Atlantic and save her husband from an English prison, Phoebe tries to refuse, then finds herself kidnapped.

Captain Rafe Docherty is a man in search of revenge. His ship is no place for women, but he needs Belinda in order to obtain information about the man who destroyed his family and his life. Between Belinda's whining and Phoebe's hostility, Rafe can't help but wonder if he made the right choice.

When it becomes apparent there is an enemy among them on the ship, the stakes are raised. Will they reach the English shore in time? Can love and forgiveness overcome vengeance?

My Thoughts
Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes is an incredibly adventurous story! I was just hanging on to figure out how everything was going to work out in the end. Rafe and Phoebe were the perfect hero and heroine in this story. At first glance, they are total opposites and provided a lot of balance for one another. However, as the story progressed, they realized that they had more in common than they could have imagined.

I was also impressed by how well-researched the book was. The historical touches and the dialect used by Rafe and others gives it a more realistic touch and made me feel as though I were really sailing the Atlantic with a Scottish captain.

I can't believe I haven't read anything by Laurie Alice Eakes before! I'll definitely go back and read some of her previous books while waiting on the next installment of The Midwives series! [4 stars]

Blue Moon Promise by Colleen Coble

Blue Moon Promise
by Colleen Coble
Under Texas Stars, Book 1
Historical Christian Fiction / Romance
Published February 2012
Thomas Nelson
320 pages

About the Book
Book Number One in the Under Texas Stars series

A love like Lucy and Nate’s only comes along once in a blue moon . . .

Lucy Marsh's worldly resources are running out, but she's fiercely determined to care for her younger brother and sister. When she discovers that their father's recent death was no accident, Lucy is eager to leave town. She accepts a proxy marriage she believes will provide safe refuge. But trouble follows her to Texas where her new husband is surprised to suddenly have a wife and children to care for.

Nate Stanton always hoped he'd marry someday, but running the family ranch meant he had no time for romance. When his father deposits Lucy Marsh—a city girl—on his doorstep, with two siblings in the bargain, he expects ranch life will send her running on the first train out of town. But Lucy is made of tougher stuff than Nate imagined. When danger moves in, Nate finds he'd give anything to protect Lucy and the children he's grown to love. Even if it means giving up his ranch.

My Thoughts
I've said this before, but I sure do love a marriage-of-convenience story line. Colleen Coble pulls it off beautifully in Blue Moon Promise. I fell in love with Lucy right off the bat. She's a strong woman who must care for her brother and sister. She's always taken care of herself but must learn to trust Nate once they are married and also depend fully on God. I think anyone who's been married for more than a week will relate to the struggles Nate and Lucy have adjusting to married life.

Sometimes romance novels have a way of over-simplifying or glossing over problems, but Colleen did a wonderful job of painting each character in a realistic light. Anyone who loves a romance with a hint of danger will enjoy Blue Moon Promise. [4 stars]

Thursday 3: A Texan's Promise

What is Thursday 3? It's a new once monthly meme, hosted by Book Obsessed, in which we will be discussing our love/hate relationship with our current read.

Here is how Thursday 3 works:
Take your current read, or book you previously finished, and tell the following 3 things about it.
  1. Character from the book you LOVE (This can be a character you want as your BFF or someone you want to take home to meet the parents)
  2. Character from the book you HATE (This character does not have to be the villian, just someone you disliked)
  3. Your overall LOVE/HATE of the book. (If you haven't decided your feelings for the book yet, or if you prefer, just provide a snippet from the book containing either the word "LOVE" or "HATE")
Anyone can participate!! Just link your posts in the linky on Book Obsessed's post!

Today's Thursday 3 is A Texan's Promise by Shelley Gray.

LOVE - I loved Clayton Proffitt. He was so dreamy and sparks flew between Vanessa and Clayton from the very beginning. He was also so protective and always had Vanessa's best interests in heart. Throw in the fact that he's a good, old-fashioned cowboy . . . what's NOT to love?!

HATE - Well, I think "hate" might be a bit strong, but I couldn't stand Vanessa's brother. What kind of brother just stands outside the door while his sister is screaming for help and getting beat up? What a jerk! His excuse about being afraid just flew all over me!

LOVE / HATE - I absolutely loved A Texan's Promise. It was a quick read for me, and I wasn't ready for it to be over when I reached the last page. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out this spring!

YOU Can Change A Child's Life

I became a Compassion sponsor in February 2007. I was a couple of years into my first job. I wasn't making a lot of money. But some people I worked with were going to Uganda to see the work of Compassion firsthand and we all had the chance to sponsor children in the villages they were going to visit. I looked through the child sponsorship packets knowing that I couldn't really afford to sponsor a child. Looking at the faces of children living in poverty in Uganda, though, I knew I couldn't use money as an excuse not to sponsor one of these precious children.

So I committed to sponsor Gloria. She was 7 at the time and lived with her grandmother. A friend who went to Uganda on that trip was able to meet her, take gifts from me, and visit her home—which really jump-started our relationship.

Five years later, Gloria is 12. And I can see tangible evidence of how Compassion has changed her life.

She is healthy and growing. (She's so tall now!)

She goes to school and loves it. I can remember the first letter I received from her that she wrote all by herself! It was a momentous occasion!

She has access to healthcare and learns about healthy living.

She eats nutritious foods and drinks clean water.

She gets life-skills training that will help her long after she graduates from school and the Compassion program.

She knows that a family half a world away loves her and writes to her. We pray for each other and share in joys and sorrows together. We're her second family. And she's part of our family too. (Do YOU keep pictures of random strangers on your fridge? I didn't think so!)

Most importantly, though, she has had the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ and what it means to have a relationship with Him. All of these other benefits change Gloria's here and now. But a relationship with Jesus will change her eternity.

Gloria is one of the fortunate ones, though. There are many children who are still waiting for a sponsor. Will you consider sponsoring one of these waiting children today?

When you flip through the pictures on Compassion's website, the Longest Waiting Children will be noted by a small heart on their picture. You can change the life of a child and their entire family for a mere $38 each month. As an extra "thank you" Compassion will send you a special Compassion scrapbook when you sponsor a Longest Waiting Child online and make your first payment via credit card.

If you do sponsor a child, let me know. I'd love to rejoice with you over the newest member of your family!

I am a Compassion blogger. I am not paid for my posts. I simply write because I believe in the ministry of Compassion International.
