Debut Authors Giveaway Hop

2013 Debut Author Giveaway Hop
December 4-11
Hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & Bookhounds
Featuring books released in 2013 by Debut Authors (First Time Authors)

I'm participating in another giveaway hop! And today, I'm so excited to share a book I just recently read called To Know You by Shannon Ethridge. (Shannon isn't technically a first-time author, but this is her first novel.) I thought this book was just phenomenal, and I'd love for one of you to read it too! (You can read my review here.)

About the Book
Julia Whittaker’s rocky past yielded two daughters, both given up for adoption as infants. Now she must find them to try to save her son.

Julia and Matt Whittaker’s son has beaten the odds for thirteen years only to have the odds—and his liver—crash precipitously. The only hope for his survival is a “living liver” transplant, but the transplant list is long and Dillon's time is short. His two older half-sisters, born eighteen months apart to two different fathers, offer his only hope for survival.

But can Julia ask a young woman—someone she surrendered to strangers long ago and has never spoken with—to make such a sacrifice to save a brother she’s never known? Can she muster the courage to journey back into a shame-filled season of her life, face her choices and their consequences, and find any hope of healing?

And what if she discovers in her own daughters’ lives that a history of foolish choices threatens to repeat itself?

Julia knows she’s probably embarking on a fool’s errand—searching for the daughters she abandoned only now that she needs something from them.

But love compels Julia to take this journey. Can grace and forgiveness compel her daughters to join her?

Countdown to Christmas | Interview w/ Melody Carlson

Welcome to Day 2 of the Countdown to Christmas {Book} Party! Yay! If you missed yesterday's interviews and giveaways, Tricia Goyer and Ruth Logan Herne stopped by. Christmas memories and giveaways!

Today, I'm pleased to have Melody Carlson drop in for a Blogside Chat! In case you're unaware, Melody has written a TON of books. Her Christmas books are some of my faves, and she has a new Christmas book out this year called A Simple Christmas Wish.

(Later today, I'll be posting as part of a Debut Authors Giveaway Hop. Plus, there are 75+ other stops in the hop!)

ib4b: Melody, welcome to i blog 4 books! What is your most memorable Christmas and why?

Melody Carlson: 1964 because Oregon had a huge flood that Christmas. We normally made a three hour trip to my grandparents’ home for holidays, because they knew how to do Christmas right. But because of road closures etc., it was ‘inadvisable.’ Still, my sister and I urged our single mom to make the perilous drive. Anyway, a couple hours into the trip we were stopped by state troopers because the road ahead was under water. They said ‘travel at your own risk’ warning that the roads behind us were getting inundated too. We told Mom to “go for it” and watched with wide eyes as our heavy 54 Chevy plowed through the water and as water leaked inside through the floorboard. And we also witnessed a VW Bug floating away. At my grandparents, since we couldn’t get to the woods to cut down a tree due to floods, my grandpa chopped down a gorgeous twelve foot holly tree in their yard and that became our Christmas tree. Beautiful but prickly.

ib4b: Oh wow, that definitely sounds like a memorable Christmas! Name three words that you associate with Christmas.

MC: Love, peace, joy. I just wish that the whole world could enjoy those gifts!

ib4b: How will your family celebrate Christmas this year?

MC: We’ll be in our home in the mountains. Hopefully with snow. We’ll have family and friends and neighbors—we usually invite anyone who needs a place to go. We’ll eat too much, laugh a lot, play games, sing songs, open gifts, and just enjoy celebrating God’s precious Gift to mankind. Over the years I’ve tried to simplify the “holidays” and just focus on the parts that bring the most joy.

ib4b: What is the best gift you’ve ever given?

MC: Tough question. I don’t think of myself as terribly clever when it comes to gifting. I lean toward the practical. Plus, it would probably depend on which person received it. My sons might say it was the season ski passes they got in high school. My granddaughter might say it was her first bike.

ib4b: Those are great gifts! Who gave you the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received? What was it?

MC: I recently shared this story publicly (for the first time). On my first Christmas (I was 9 months old) and my parents’ marriage was in serious trouble because my dad was an abusive alcoholic and my mom (with two small children) was in way over her head. I believe God looked down on me and said, “I’m going to give you exactly what you need today.” That was the day my husband was born. (Yes, I’m nine months older). But we’ve been happily married for more than 35 years and God was right—Christopher was exactly what I needed and my best gift ever!

ib4b: What a sweet story! I'm so glad God knows what we need ... even before we do! Tell me about the Christmas tradition that means the most to you.

MC: Over the years, I’ve been less inclined to hold onto to “traditions.” Mostly because each year is different. We have a different group of guests in our home. Different situations. Sometimes there are problems and conflicts and we just have to make the best of it. But my favorite “tradition” is to find a moment when all is quiet (usually after everyone is in bed) and I just sit in the glowing light of the tree and decorations, relishing the wonder of what God did by sending His precious Son to be the Light of the World for everyone.

ib4b: How do you keep your focus on Christ during this hectic but wondrous time of year?

MC: I think it’s the same throughout the year. You maintain a personal relationship by spending time with Him—on a daily basis. By being thankful and by attempting to imitate his love and grace toward those around you.

ib4b: You sound like you've been in my head recently ... and put into words many of the things I've been thinking about making "Christmas" last all year long.

This or That ...
  • White or colorful lights? White lights on the tree. Colored lights on the house.
  • Turkey or ham? Both.
  • Tree - real or fake? Real, Real, Real!!!
  • Hot cocoa or apple cider? I’m really more of a coffee and tea drinker.
  • Frosty or Rudolph? Rudolph
  • Wrapping paper or gift bag? Both. I like how wrapped presents look beneath the tree. But if I’m rushed, I’m thankful for gift bags.
About A Simple Christmas Wish
Rachel Milligan is caring for her seven-year-old niece, Holly, at her home in Chicago when she receives devastating news: Holly's parents have been killed in a plane crash. Because Rachel is Holly's only known relative, she assumes that she will be her beloved niece's guardian. However, custody is awarded to Lydia, a distant aunt who happens to be Amish. Just a week before Christmas, Rachel takes Holly to the Amish community in the hopes of persuading Aunt Lydia to relinquish custody. Instead, Lydia sets out to teach Holly to live according to the Amish way. As family secrets emerge and old wounds are healed, Rachel realizes that she will do whatever it takes to ensure that Holly has the loving family she needs.

Combining an Amish family saga with the anticipation of Christmas cheer and the promise of a budding romance, this newest Christmas story from beloved author Melody Carlson is sure to please.

Countdown to Christmas | Interview & Giveaway w/ Ruth Logan Herne

Welcome back to the Countdown to Christmas {Book} Party! In case you missed it, the party kicked off earlier today with an interview and giveaway with Tricia Goyer. Now, I'm pleased to have Ruth Logan Herne here to keep this party going! (Melody Carlson will be stopping by tomorrow!)

Ruthy has two Christmas books out this year: Love Finds You in the City at Christmas and The Lawman's Holiday Wish. Be sure to read all the way to the end to find out more about these books and for a chance to enter a copy of each!

i blog 4 books: Ruthy, thank you so much for stopping by this afternoon! Tell us about your most memorable Christmas and why?

Ruth Logan Herne: When my baby niece was born on Christmas day, a month early, very healthy, a true blessing. Her parents had lost their first son nearly a year before, on January 6th and I prayed that God would grant them joy of a baby at Christmas… and he did! Amity was a five-pound gift from heaven. Nothing would ever replace the big brother she would never know, but having her get born on Christmas day was a wonderful thing!

ib4b: Oh my! That IS a wonderful Christmas! And Amity is such a pretty name! Name three words that you associate with Christmas.

RLH: Joy, Love and Giving! Followed closely by EGGNOG and music!!!!!

ib4b: How will your family celebrate Christmas this year?

RLH: Oh, we have a big family, so multiple times and ways. Family parties, bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, adopting a family, helping with Christmas “boxes” and foods, lovely dinners cooked by me because I get so excited when my ‘away’ kids come home for the holidays! Love it!

ib4b: What is the best gift you’ve ever given?

RLH: Oh, my. Oh my stars. Oh my gracious sakes. I have no idea.  Piffle, you’ve stumped me!!!!  I think that means I’m a LAME GIVER!!!! Dagnabbit!

ib4b: Haha! I don't think that means you're a lame giver, though! Maybe it just means that ALL of your gifts are awesome. :) Who gave you the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received? What was it?

RLH: God!!!!  And I mean that so sincerely because that first gift of Christmas, “a child” is so intrinsically a part of me. I love children, I celebrate babies and we’re so blessed to have a family. So yes, this one I can answer whole-heartedly: Best Gift Of Christmas: The Christ Child!!!!

ib4b: Tell me about the Christmas tradition that means the most to you.

RLH: Reading the Gospel of St. Luke at our annual family Christmas party. My mother did it once she was older and we’ve carried the tradition on with all of the kids and grandkids… we read about shepherds and angels and stars at night! And a child, born to the poor.

ib4b: How do you keep your focus on Christ during this hectic but wondrous time of year?

RLH: I’ve had to work to learn to do this. I got caught up in the “fancies” of Christmas when the kids were smaller and I had to re-learn simple. I love simple! Good food… Great people… God’s love. And music! I love Christmas music! And The Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my favorite fun Christmas movies. The Fozziwig Christmas party!!!  Happy dancing, just thinking of that!

This or That ...
  • White or colorful lights?  Both! Several rooms, we have fun with different lights in them!
  • Turkey or ham? Turkey!!!! With gravy… mashed potatoes…. Cranberry orange relish!  Oh, yum!
  • Tree - real or fake?  Both. We have a real tree in the dining room and an aritificial one In the living room because it’s got a wood-burning stove. The real tree is our family tree, all the fun paper ornaments the kids made when they were little, the ones that mean so much! The other one is a “country” tree I saw at Agway Farm Store twenty years ago. I fell in love with it and saved $5/week  so when they put it on sale after Christmas, I bought it. Just sweet, country, white lights and farm animals. Burlap. Paper. So sweet!
  • Hot cocoa or apple cider?  Cider! I love spiced apple cider and I live in “Apple Country” truly our local designation! My friends are apple farmers and they give me lots of guidance on farm books…  In fact, Kim Zarpentine, owner of Zarpentine Farms in Hilton NY was a big help in developing the story line for “Piper McKinney” my heroine and recurring character from my second Kirkwood Lake book “Falling for the Lawman”.
  • Frosty or Rudolph?  Rudolph. I love Rudolph!!! Although I can sing music from both shows, very badly, ty the way, and enjoy them with the little kids, but Rudolph wins!!!
  • Wrapping paper or gift bag?  I love gift bags for showers and things like that, but no one should mess with the joy of a kid unwrapping presents under a tree!!!
About The Lawman's Holiday Wish
No one in Kirkwood Lake seems willing to forget, or forgive, Rainey McKinney's troubled past. But Rainey can't afford to let that bother her. Her top priority is rebuilding her life and being a good mom to her twin daughters. Even handsome deputy sheriff Luke Campbell can't distract her, tempting as he is. She's determined to keep her distance, but as his son and her girls form a special bond, Rainey and Luke can't help but do the same. Can Rainey put her past behind her once and for all and embrace a future full of hope—and love?

About Love Finds You in the City at Christmas
Love comes to New York City in two heartwarming stories of Christmas past and present.

In 'Red Kettle Christmas,' it's 1946, and police officer Mike Wolzak inherits the family home. . . and the custody of his troubled sister. While on patrol during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Mike meets a Salvation Army bell ringer struggling to support herself and her young child. Over the holiday season in Manhattan, she teaches the veteran how to support his family. In the process, he gains a new one.

In 'Manhattan Miracle,' a war-weary soldier finally comes home. Max Wolzak is celebrating Christmas in the Manhattan brownstone where he spent much of his childhood when he meets Sarah, his sister's old schoolmate. Sparks fly as the pair gets reacquainted over holiday events, but when Max realizes she will leave for the Middle East the day after Christmas, he has a decision to make.

About Ruth Logan Herne
Born into poverty, Ruthy is a hearth-and-home author who loves God, chocolate, her family, coffee, dogs and frappuccinos... And not always in that order!

She lives in tiny-town USA in upstate New York, loves to visit her kids in big cities, and thinks that getting lost is God's way of giving her new plot lines to explore!

When she's not writing she's working full time torturing small children for financial gain and shamelessly exploiting kids and baby animals to sell her delightfully sweet books.

She's pretty sure cleaning is over-rated, that orderliness is a military skill to be admired from afar, and that possums should leave the cat food on the side porch alone.

And snakes should stay outside or beware the consequences.

She hangs out in Seekerville with an awesome bunch of writers and readers and loves chatting it up with folks. That's a nice way of saying she talks a lot!

Countdown to Christmas | Interview & Giveaway w/ Tricia Goyer

Woo hoo! It's finally here. Today, I'm kicking off the Countdown to Christmas {Book} Party, and I'm inviting you to stop by each day to see what's going on! I'll post at least once per day (most days, I'll be posting two or even three times) and share Christmas-themed Blogside Chats with authors, reviews of Christmas books, and lots of giveaways! I'll also throw in a couple of things that I want to share as Christmas approaches, so it should be a ton of fun!

To get things started, I'm so excited to have Tricia Goyer with us for a quick Christmasy Blogside Chat and giveaway! Tricia's newest book is a great Christmas read—A Christmas Gift for Rose. If you haven't read it yet, please check it out! You can read my review and see just how much I loved it!

(Also, be sure to stop by later today for another Blogside Chat (and giveaway) with Ruth Logan Herne!)

i blog 4 books: Welcome, Tricia! What is your most memorable Christmas and why?

Tricia Goyer: That's SO hard! I love every Christmas! It's my favorite holiday. The first one that came to mind is when I was eighteen years old. I'd given my heart to Jesus when I was pregnant and I gave birth to a baby boy right before my eighteenth birthday (and after my high school graduation!). After I dedicated my life to God I'd started praying for my future husband, and God brought me John! So in one year I became a new creation in Christ, graduated from high school, had my son, turned eighteen years old, and met a wonderful Christian man and got engaged. I can still feel the glow of joy that I felt sitting under the Christmas tree, understanding faith and family more than I ever had before.

ib4b: Wow! That does sound like an amazing Christmas! Name three words that you associate with Christmas.

TG: Jesus, gifts, family

ib4b: How will your family celebrate Christmas this year?

TG: We're going to have most of our family here with food, games, togetherness, and then we'll have ALL my kids together in January. The “big” gift for everyone this year will be a family trip the month after Christmas. I'm excited!

ib4b: What is the best gift you’ve ever given?

TG: I gave my son Settlers of Catan one year, and it's our family's all time favorite board game!

ib4b: I've heard a lot about that game but haven't played it before. We might have to change that soon. :) Who gave you the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received? What was it?

TG: When I was seven years old my grandpa made me a doll house. My mom and grandma furnished it. It was so sweet!!

ib4b: Oh, gifts made with love are the best! Tell me about the Christmas tradition that means the most to you.

TG: Every year we “act out” the Christmas story. The kids take different parts and we act out the scene with Mary, Joseph, the angel, etc. It's fun to see how the production changes as the kids grow . . . and as we add new ones!

ib4b: How do you keep your focus on Christ during this hectic but wondrous time of year?

TG: I love to have Christmas hymns playing throughout the day. We also have Christ-centered decorations around the house that lead to conversation. And the center is the numerous nativity sets that I have around the house. I have them at kid-level and let them touch them. I want the conversation to come up, often.

ib4b: What is your favorite ...
Christmas movie? It's a Wonderful Life
Christmas song? "Santa Baby." LOL . . . and "Mary Do You Know" for completely different reasons!
Christmas treat? Chocolate-covered Oreos :)
Christmas smell? Cinnamon
Christmas children’s book? The Crippled Lamb

End of the Year 2013 Reading Cram
December 9-22

Crystal, Melanie, and Amber have talked me into one more read-a-thon for the year. Well ... it didn't take much to convince me! I'm hoping to read (or finish!) 10 books during the read-a-thon. Hopefully, this will help me get a few things wrapped up by the end of the year so I can start fresh in 2014. I may participate in a few of the challenges, but I'm going to focus on reading during these two weeks.
