As I've done for the past few Mondays, I wanted to share a few of my favorite books with you. This week, I'm featuring several books that were nominated for a 2012 Christy Award as part of the "Road to the Christys" blog tour you may be seeing on other blogs. I've read all five of these books and thought they were just incredible. So excited that they have been nominated for such a prestigious award! I posted a complete list of the finalists here, and the winners will be announced next Monday (July 16). Have you read these or any of the other finalists? What did you think? Which books would you vote for?

"I collect words. I keep them in a box in my mind. I'd like to keep them in a real box, something pretty, maybe a shoe box covered with flowered wrapping paper. Whenever I wanted, I'd open the box and pick up the papers, reading and feeling the words all at once. Then I could hide the box. But the words are safer in my mind. There, he can't take them."
Ten-year
old Kaylee Wren doesn't speak. Not since her drug-addled mother walked

the care of a man who is as dangerous as he is evil. With silence her
only refuge, Kaylee collects words she might never speak from the only
memento her mother left behind: a dictionary.
Sierra Dawn

to control her circumstances. But on the twelfth anniversary of her

(My Review)
To create something that will last is Claire Laurent's most fervent
desire as an artist. It's also her greatest weakness. When her fraud
of a father deals her an unexpected hand, Claire is forced to flee from
New Orleans to Nashville, only a year after the War Between the States
has ended. Claire's path collides with that of Sutton Monroe, and she
considers him a godsend for not turning her in to the authorities. But
when they meet again and he refuses to come to her aid, she realizes
she's sorely misjudged the man. Trading an unwanted destiny for an
unknown future, Claire finds herself in the middle of Nashville's elite
society and believes her dream of creating a lasting impression in the
world of art may finally be within reach.
All that Sutton Monroe
holds dear lies in ruin. He's determined to reclaim his heritage and to
make the men who murdered his father pay. But what he discovers on his
quest for vengeance reveals a truth that may cost him more than he ever
imagined.
Set at Nashville's historical Belmont Mansion, a
stunning antebellum manor built by Mrs. Adelicia Acklen, the richest
woman in America in the 1860s, A Lasting Impression showcases the
deep, poignant, unforgettable characters that set Tamera's stories
apart and provides an inspiring love story that will capture readers'
hearts and leave them eager for more.

The Stars Shine Bright by Sibella Giorello
by Sibella Giorello
Raleigh Harmon series, Book 5
Christian Fiction
Available July 17, 2012
Thomas Nelson
400 pages
About the Book
After the FBI suspends her for bending its rules, Special Agent Raleigh Harmon is looking for a chance to redeem her career and re-start her life.
Sent undercover to a thoroughbred horse track, Raleigh takes on a double life to find out who’s fixing the races. But when horses start dying and then her own life is threatened, Raleigh realizes something bigger—and more sinister—is ruining Emerald Meadows.
She’s never felt more alone.
Her one contact with the FBI is Special Agent Jack Stephanson, a guy who seems to jump from antagonistic to genuine friend depending on the time of day. And she can’t turn to her family for support. They’re off-limits while she’s undercover, and her mother isn’t speaking to her anyway, having been confined to a mental hospital following a psychotic breakdown. Adding insult to her isolation, Raleigh’s fiancĂ© wants them to begin their life together—now—precisely when she’s been ordered not to be herself.
With just days left before the season ends, Raleigh races to stop the killing and find out who’s behind the track’s trouble, all the while trying to determine if Jack is friend or foe, and whether marrying her fiancĂ© will make things better—or worse.
Raleigh is walking through the darkest night she’s faced, searching for a place where the stars shine bright.
My Thoughts
The Stars Shine Bright is the fifth book in the Raleigh Harmon series. After reading The Mountains Bow Down last year, I was excited to read more of Raleigh's story. Sibella Giorello writes incredibly complex and intricate mysteries, and this was no exception. The writing was tight, the story was detailed, and the characters were likeable. While I enjoyed the book, I found that I wasn't entirely invested in the mystery (centered on horse racing) or the personal drama between Raleigh and her fiance. However, because of Giorello's writing and my interest in what I *think* might be happening in Raleigh's personal life next, I'll be sure to check out the next book in the series. [3 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Nelson in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Thursday 3 | Cottage by the Sea by Robin Jones Gunn
What is Thursday 3? It's a new once monthly meme, hosted by Book Obsessed, in which we will be discussing our love/hate relationship with our current read.
Here is how Thursday 3 works:
Take your current read, or book you previously finished, and tell the following 3 things about it.
It's easy to say that I "love" the main character or "hate" the main
antagonist, but each month when I post for Thursday 3, I try to find a
less obvious person to "love" or "hate." Today I'm featuring Cottage by the Sea by Robin Jones Gunn. I finished it earlier this week and will be posting a review soon.
LOVE - Erin's husband Mike was easy to love. He truly was Erin's hero, and it was nice to see a Godly man portrayed in this character.
HATE - Sharlene, Erin's best friend, was a little disappointing and annoying. I was so put off by some of her choices and responses to Erin's problems. (Hate is definitely too strong of a word here.)
LOVE / HATE - Love! (Of course!) I'm a huge fan of Robin Jones Gunn. This book is a favorite for sure. :)

- Character from the book you LOVE (This can be a character you want as your BFF or someone you want to take home to meet the parents)
- Character from the book you HATE (This character does not have to be the villian, just someone you disliked)
- Your overall LOVE/HATE of the book. (If you haven't decided your feelings for the book yet, or if you prefer, just provide a snippet from the book containing either the word "LOVE" or "HATE")

Teaser Tuesday | Stars Collide
Teaser Tuesday is a weekly post hosted by MizB on her blog Should Be Reading. Hop over for details or to link up!
Stars Collide is the first book in the Backstage Pass series by Janice Thompson. Funny, funny series! (Although the teaser below doesn't sound like it.) You can read my review of the first two books here and the final book which released this month here.
He gave me a sympathetic look and brushed a loose hair out of my eye. "For one thing, we're not going to panic, Kat. That won't help anything. So no abrupt change of plans."

Blogside Chat | Beth K. Vogt
I recently read Beth K. Vogt's fiction debut, Wish You Were Here, and loved every single page! (You can read my review here.) I'm so excited that Beth is joining me today for a Blogside Chat! I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I did!
i blog 4 books: Beth, thanks so much for visiting i blog 4 books today! For any readers who might not be familiar with you, please tell us a bit about yourself.
Beth K. Vogt: I’m a novelist who said she’d never write fiction – but I like to say that I’ve discovered that God’s best is often behind the door marked “Never.” God used a season of burnout to move me from the nonfiction side of the writing road over to what I call the “Dark Side.”
ib4b: Ha! Well, I for one, am glad you took the plunge into the "Dark Side!" What was the inspiration behind Wish You Were Here?
BKV: Wish You Were Here asks the question: Can the wrong kiss lead to Mr. Right? While that question sets up a fun romance, the kiss-gone-wrong is a symbol for the mistakes we all make. Do we truly believe that God redeems our mistakes – that he can bring good out of our wrong choices?
ib4b: What message or lesson do you hope readers will take away from reading it?
BKV: There are several different messages woven through Wish You Were Here. I think one of the most compelling lessons is the one the heroine, Allison, learns: that she is not the sum total of her mistakes – that God is more than she ever imagined him to be, and that with him on her side she can be fearless.
ib4b: How do you see yourself in the book?
BKV: If you’re asking if I wove any of myself into Wish You Were Here, then the answer is yes, I did. I think every author tucks a bit of themselves into their books. While I’m not Allison, I did give her one characteristic that I understood: her fears. I struggled with fear for years and it’s only through my relationship with God that I found peace and hope and release from fear.
ib4b: The more I read, the more I appreciate the research that authors do to deliver a realistic story. Tell us about your research process for this book.
BKV: The book is set in Colorado, where I live, but I did travel to Estes Park to ensure I got some of those scenes right. And I also had to research the llamas. That involved going to a local llama ranch and spending several hours talking to the owners, taking pictures, and then doing additional research online.
ib4b: Oh the llamas! That was a rather unique (and funny!) addition to the story. :) It seems like most authors have quite an interesting journey to getting published. What did you do in your "former life"?
BKV: In my former life I was a wife and mom – and I still am. But before writing novels I was a nonfiction writer and editor. I edited Connections, the leadership magazine for Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) International. I also published a MOPS-brand book, Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing for Motherhood after 35.
ib4b: Where do you like to write?
BKV: I have an office that is three-quarters mine. There’s a desk in one corner that my husband uses to pay bills and my daughter uses for homework. But the room is painted and decorated to my taste, complete with one deep red wall – and when the door is shut, the family knows not to interrupt me.
ib4b: What were some of your favorite books growing up?
BKV: I read and re-read Little Women–and cried every time Beth died. I also loved The Secret Garden and anything written by Georgette Heyer or L. M. Montgomery.
ib4b: Little Women is one of my all-time favorites, too. I'll confess, though, it's my one fave that I would change the ending too. What was the last "must read" Christian fiction book that you read?
BKV: The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck – absolutely exquisite writing.
ib4b: Oh, The Wedding Dress was so good! Do you have a "life verse" or favorite Scripture?
BKV: Psalm 115:1 – Not to us, LORD, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
ib4b: Write your memoir in six words or less.
BKV: God waits behind the door marked “Never.”
ib4b: What bands/artists make your concert wish-list?
BKV: Chris Tomlin, Amy Grant, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum … oh I could go on and on …
ib4b: Yes, to all! Great list. :) What's your favorite movie?
BKV: The Magic of Ordinary Days (It’s a Hallmark Special.)
ib4b: If you painted every room in your house only one color, which color would you choose?
BKV: Green – variations of green.
ib4b: Can you tell us a bit about what you're working on now? When can we expect to see it in stores?
BKV: My next novel is titled Catch a Falling Star and will be released May 2013. It’s a contemporary romance set in Colorado Springs. It tackles the question: What do you do when life doesn’t go according to plan? Do you keep pushing for Plan A? Pull Plan B out of your back pocket? Or do you just settle?
ib4b: Oooh ... sounds like an interesting storyline to tackle. I look forward to reading it! Beth, thank you so much for joining me today!

Be swept away to Charleston of 1811, a city bustling with immigrants like Adalia, who is a runaway slave so light-skinned that no one guesses her past. Terrified her secret will be discovered, she settles into a quiet life making herbal remedies for a local doctor. But when Morgan, the handsome son of a prominent family, sweeps her into his glamorous world—a world in which the truth about Adalia’s heritage would ruin them both—suspicions and petty jealousies are aroused. What will Morgan do when he discovers that the woman he has fallen in love with is a runaway slave?

Sophia Makinoff is certain that 1876 is the year that she’ll become the wife of a certain US Congressman, and happily plans her debut into the Capitol city. But when he proposes to her roommate instead, Sophia is stunned. Hoping to flee her heartache and humiliation, she signs up with the Board of Foreign Missions on a whim.
With dreams of a romantic posting to the Far East, Sophia is dismayed to find she’s being sent to the Ponca Indian Agency in the bleak Dakota Territory. She can’t even run away effectively and begins to wonder how on earth she’ll be able to guide others as a missionary. But teaching the Ponca children provides her with a joy she has never known—and never expected—and ignites in her a passion for the people she’s sent to serve.
It’s a passion shared by the Agency carpenter, Willoughby Dunn, a man whose integrity and selflessness are unmatched. The Poncas are barely surviving. When U.S. policy decrees that they be uprooted from their land and marched hundreds of miles away in the middle of winter, Sophia and Will wade into rushing waters to fight for their friends, their love, and their destiny.

Kara McKormick is told she’s auditioning to star in a new teen variety show. But it’s what she isn’t told that could change her life. The feisty New Yorker moves to sunny Orlando to participate in a month-long audition, where she’ll live with nine other contestants and an eccentric housemother. Kara knows that the show already has a big-time celebrity lined up for the co-host, but she doesn’t know who it is.
Chad Beacon quickly rose to fame after winning America’s Next Star, but he doesn’t want his entire career to be about singing. There is so much more he wants to do—like act. The new variety show sounds like the perfect next step for him, but his parents want him to have a co-star who shares his faith since they’ll be spending so much time together.
Acting is high on Kara’s priority list. But a relationship with God? Not so much. In fact, she’s tried to stay away from anything religious. But God is after Kara’s heart and He’s put people in her life who are showing her there’s far more to Christianity than rules and judgment.
And just when it seems that Kara’s going to have to give up her acting dream, God reveals that she may have a starring role after all—in a story so big only He could write it.

Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, Libby’s under suspicion for the crime, and her handsome lieutenant clearly doubts her innocence.

Available 7/17/2012
Thomas Nelson
Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the seaward shore of Hope Island could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer’s talent and love of history. She’s delighted to learn of family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she’s met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams.
But Libby soon realizes that only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her newfound brothers and sisters are convinced she’s there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, Libby’s under suspicion for the crime, and her handsome lieutenant clearly doubts her innocence.
Libby’s dream-come-true is becoming a nightmare. Can she find her friend and establish her innocence? Must she sell Tidewater Inn and lose her family again? Or can she find a home for her heart on the beautiful shores of Hope Island?
